My horse has had swelling around his check ligament area since the beginning of August. After 5 weeks the swelling had gone and I decided to begin walking, after moving yard which involved him trotting about his field and one 10 minute session on the horse walker the swelling returned. So i had him ultrasounded september 11th the ligament was more inflammed than the other and the "fibres werent as strong as they could be" to quote the vet so no holes or tears. I was to give it 4 weeks field rest and rescan providing no more flare ups. Well because he's not lame and it isn't painful he's being his usual silly self - has the odd buck and canter round the field and is generally doing my head in because hes out of work being bargey. It continues to swell up and go down. I have tried valerian and ACP to no effect and he plays in the field regardless of what food he is on if any. Hes on nothing heating and haylage. Bandaged at night and magnetic wraps if theres no turnout.

Anyone had any experience of check ligament strain?

What did you do to rehab it? My vet recommended field rest to keep him using it to strengthen it but he has to come in at night because he paces.

Any calmer reccomemdations? Hes not nervous or stressed just a silly 6yo who behaves like a yearling!

Thanks

Should probably mention he aquired the injury in the field with other horses (as well as numerous other minor injuries and scars!!) and is now on his own in a little paddock all horses around him are calm.
Think i need to wrap him in bubble wrap!

My mare has done both her front Check Ligaments. She had Shock Wave treatment and Adiquine (Spelling) injections. There is still a very small swelling but they have never really bothered her.

She has competed in several endurance rides including the Golden Horse Shoe and the Red Dragon, both hilly tough rides. She was never lame.

She has never copied with box rest so to start with we built a small corral around one of my stables so that she could see and touch the others.

Now at the age of 20 she has Navicular and is BF but continues to be hacked out.

She was never lame. The first lump I noticed was after we had been out in the woods and I thought she had a Blackthorn in. It was only because I was due to go to a competition that I asked the vet to look for me. The second one she did in the field and after seeing the first one I knew what she had done. Again she was never lame.

As far as I can remember it was only a few weeks before she was being ridden out again. She continued to compete at a high level.
