Hi - my eventer is recovering from a check ligament strain. He has never been lame on it.
he has had 2 months box rest with in-hand walking and 3 shockwave treatments. i have just been given the all clear to start riding him in walk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this injury? how long did it take to get back to full work?

My TB has a chronic injury to his check ligament. When it first happened I did a lot of googling and generally found that the average horse with careful fittening on a hard surface (ie roadwork) following rest the prognosis is very good for a full recovery often within 6-8 months of initial injury.

Unfortunately my TB is riddled with other health problems so cannot go on box rest, which means that his injury is more a case of management than cure. Mine has injured and then re-injured himself by messing about in the field (fooling about with his pals). He is now in a flat field with a friend who is a calming influence and this has made a big difference.

I believe the injury occurs when making tight turns/twists so avoid anything that overloads the leg in the early stages of rehab work.

Would agree with that. had a pony who had a check ligament strain. She was turned away for 6 months and then broought back into work gradually with lots of road walking/hacking. she made a full recovery.

Same as you- 6 months off after straining it in dec last year. Ultrasound therapy twice a day for 3 months.Came back into steady fittening work taking care to avoid deep going and he has been competing dressage and went autumn hunting (wont be doing full hunting unless i am sure of the ground)

my horse did her check jsut over 2 years ago, had 6 weeks box rest, then all the walking and slowly bought her back to work, after about a year she was back on full form, jumping and everything.

i was very careful with her though and unfortunatley she went slightly wrong behind and becuase of the increased strain on her front legs she has now just been diagnosed that her front check has gone again, so if anyone knows the chance of recovery from this sort of thing that would be great
