How long should it take for the swelling and heat to go from a check ligament injury?

My horse did it back on 1st Nov and has been seen by vet - box rest for a while, restricted turn out and lots of short walks - now getting longer. Scan on 10th Dec showed fibres were healing. but was still lame in trot so staying with walk work.

But there is still heat and swelling in the leg - should that have gone by now or will it just take a long time to go? not lame in walk and back to the vets in two weeks to see if lame in trot still.

Just getting very depressed about it and whether it will heal or not - horse is now 25!! and I can't afford to keep a pet :(

It does sound like it is still active, but all you can do is keep following the vets advice and wait for the next scan. OAP's do heal much slower but there is no point in depressing yourself about it now. Try not to worry - wait until you have a definitive answer and then worry about it then, if you need to!:)

Tendons and ligaments do take time to heal, I know as my horse had a tear in her DDFT and it took months to come right. It is something that you need to be patient about and follow the vets instructions. It can be depressing at times but regardless of whether rideable or not, your horse is your horse and we have to take the rough with the smooth. Unfortunately, paying for it is part and parcel of ownership. Hope it comes right for both you and your horse.!
