Check out these colours

This may give a clue as to what this one is:

Black, also called Electric Black and Raven Black, is very common in the Akhal-Teke and when added to the famous Akhal-Teke Glow these horses glitter with a blue or purple sheen. This color is so special it has its own name in Russian, voronaya. Cremello is also a common color in the Akhal-Teke and the glow to the coat is so strong it is visible even in a darkened barn.

oo interesting :) love all the weird colour stuff did anyone hear about the mushroom gene they found in shetlands? Or am I imagining that one
I want this dude think I would be slightly outclassed though

I think he's gorgeous and could give any warmblood a run for their money ;) I dislike the idea that only warmbloods can do dressage but then again I dislike a lot about modern dressage

I know they are not Arabs I said they are KIND OF ARABY things, they are more like an Arab than any other breed. And it was years ago 1960s when they competed at the Olympics, dont think they would stand a chance now in dressage against the Warmbloods!!

I maintain that they aren't 'araby things' as they really don't look like arabs. I don't have a problem with you not liking arabs or AT's but do you have to be quite so rude about it (the 'yuck yuck yuck' part)?

I also really don't see the relevance of your warmblood/Olympic statement.

Anyhoo, thank you for posting the photos. I really enjoyed looking at then. :)

Great pics, love the 1st one! :)

But I also seriously don't understand why they would not likely stand a chance against the warmbloods at dressage?

If you checkout some of the studs that breed them they has some stunning pictures and fab movement but from my limited research they can be quite quirky/ one person orientated

Faracat I think the dressage comment came from the fact I mentioned there was a
horse who competed at GP level Absent I think. I agree they look nothing like Arabs or why that is a bad thing:confused: There is actually quite a lot of Arab blood in warm-bloods and possibly akhal teke too (as well as cleveland bay TB and some draft types :P)

Thanks for explaining, I must have missed the Absent comment (I must read the thread properly ;) ). :D

I like Akhal Tekes and their 'unusual' looks. I have read that they are very tough and sound horses. The metallic coat is just the cherry on the cake - so to speak. :p

I like them to but have read quite a lot about their quirky personalities too not sure I am up to the challenge just yet  that and the fact I can't seem to find one with a price so I am assume it is out of my price range for the next 30-40 years
This guy is standing in the UK now I like the look of his sire too

I find akhal tekes a fascinating breed. Remember reading about them. From Turkmenistan I think and I would imagine the coat has evolved to deal with desert heat. Could you imagine the looks you would get turning up at your local show on one.

Products? As in cleaning?

Possibly not, my QH has a metallic coat (although not in the class of the AT) It shines whatever the season, is incredibly soft and silky, and self cleaning! He can be covered in liquid mud and when it had dried it simply slides off. I haven't bathed this horse in all the years I have had him -

Products as in products - gloss, show sheen, glitter spray, makeup etc - I thought everyone knew what products were?

I once rode a horse many moons ago (30 odd years!) in Portugal. He was a golden dun coloured stallion (I was only a little kid!) and his coat shone and glistened in the sun. Truly the most beautiful colour I have ever seen.

AT's are another of those marmite breeds aren't they? Love 'em or hate 'em, excellent endurance horses of course, and, apparently, all rounders too:

This site is now maintained by my business partner, so it features a lot of or guys or horses we know personally, not just an isolated few talented ATs, there are many, many super talented ones!
Here are a couple more interesting colored or particularly metallic ATs

I suppose I can see why they aren't everyone's cup of tea but I adore them!

Crikey - photos are beautiful but I bet their outgoings on "products" is high!

Nope, I don't know about the two initially posted but we use ordinary shampoo and brushing to get ours looking as they do above, in fact with the exception of the 3rd picture as it is for her advert, the other 3 hadn't even been brushed that day - totally au natural.

...

I think they are beautiful horses and they have a very 'ancient' look about them, which I think is romantic.

I also love Arabs, and yes of course there is Arab in Warmbloods. Arab has been added to many breeds at some point, to add refinement and endurance.

I know an Akhal TekexArab that does very well in endurance, but it certainly looks more 'Araby'. The pure Akhal Tekes are very distinctive.

I suppose they are a desert breed, so have that in common with Arabs. I would love one!

SWteke I have never spoke to any one who has worked with them before :) how would you describe their temperament generally speaking?

I read something once comparing them to dogs - generally they 'cling' to one rider or carer, and although they'll tolerate others they will have a much stronger bond with this person.
Also like a dog they don't take kindly to demonstrative punishments; shouting at one does nothing, but gestures and a look can calm them or make them behave.
They respond to regular care an attention, we just go and sit in the pasture with them, if you ignore them or treat them just as something to ride, not something to love they can go in a strop.

I'm hesitant to say they aren't for a novice owner/rider, as we do give riding lessons on ours. Some are the most calm and placid rides and will tolerate 'beginner mistake' or a lack of confidence and will look after these riders. Others can (similar to arab stereotypes) be very outspoken and though not flightly very hot due - it is thought - to the years of selective breeding for endurance and speed.
