Check the height of your trailer before driving under fallen trees

What is the source for it having been down for 2 days? There’s 2 people commenting one says 2 days, one says 3 and I’m not entirely convinced.

People are stupid.

Doing the school run yesterday and a Land Rover and trailer pulled out, plenty of time to slow down but the car in front of us overtook causing one of the TWO oncoming vehicles to pull onto the verge (huge gouge out of the verge). You could clearly see oncoming traffic as I slowed down fearing a head on.

Terrifying!

Doesnt really matter how long it was down for you surely still you wouldnt drive under it
It’s whether it fell down while they were driving that’s the thing …. And wouldn’t therefore be stupid.

I do of course live near the most hit bridge in Britain (newly achieved after this weeks hit) so that’s always a poss.

It looks like the tree fell on the trailer when you see the front and rear pictures. If they drove under it, surely the damage to the trailer would be very different?

Those old Ifors are properly tough. A Cheval and its feeble fibreglass front would be in teeny pieces.

I wonder if we’ll ever reliably find out whether the tree was already down across the road or not as the driver took the trailer down there.

Just in defence of the Cheval liberte trailers, I have one and in the storm at the weekend the barn roof including timber supports came off and landed on my trailer which was parked underneath. There's not even a dent it's just scuffed the paint in a couple of places, I was pretty impressed by it's sturdiness, I was dreading going to look at it when the wind finally dropped enough to make it safe enough to extract it from the roof and was quite relieved to discover there was no damage except to the paintwork.
However I'm not going to drop a tree on it to see how well it copes with that but I'm also unlikely to take it out in any conditions where a tree is likely to fall on it.

Obviously fallen trees don't have heights written on them, but with any lorry I've driven or trailer I've towed (horses/boats/transporters) I've had a little sticker on the dash with height/length/width on it, so you know if you'll fit under a bridge, through a pinch point or under the canopy at a petrol station.

I'm amazed at the tight spaces and deep rushing water that people attempt to get vehicles through.

It’s the double decker bus drivers I wonder about - surely you can’t forget you’re driving a bus?
You shouldn't, and some companies have it set up so you can't enter the route info if the bus is overheight, but deckers do come in slightly lower versions, so you might think you're ok if you're not familiar with the route/vehicle. But you really need to read the bloody signs!!

I used to drive big lorries, before things got technical, and I never tried to squeeze one under a too short bridge 😬

Years ago got lost going to a show, and came to a low bridge. My mother got out to check if we would fit under as I edged nearer to check - decision was we wouldn't. Discovered quite a bit later height of lorry was written on the back of the sun visor when pulled down! Have measured lorries since so I know but that was in my early trucking days!

Make sure that you have noted your vehicle’s height/width in both metres and feet and inches.

Too many warning signs are still only in one unit or t’other, and unless your mental arithmetic is razor sharp you don’t want to be trying to do a rapid unit conversion as you approach a low/narrow bridge. Still plenty of signs about which are only in feet and inches 😳.

I remember years ago pulling in to a service station having checked the sign on the canopy and knowing I would fit easily, and the bloke running out of the shop waving frantically at me to stop. He was clearly traumatised from previous incidents 😁
