Ellie my mare, came in with just a little scratch on her cheek a few weeks ago. It was just a scratch and we thought nothing of it. Then the next morning her face had blown up like a balloon on one side!

Called the vet, who made a little hole at the bottom of her cheek for pus to drain out, and instead of pus, a whole load of blood came pouring out. Conclusion was that she had spiked an artery running along her jaw and a heamatoma had formed inside her cheek.
Anyway, blood eventually stopped coming out, and vet was happy, and she was put onto antibiotics. Things seem to be going down to normal.

One week later her face has swollen up again, and vet is called, and he says she must come in for xRays and must have stronger antibios..

X rays show that the infection has gone into the cheekbone and that there are bony changes in the cheek area where the bone has started to distingerate.. vet reccomends stronger antibio's and re-evaluation in 7 days time..

Vet came out yesterday- and he is still not happy. Face has gone down but the swelling is still lingering and it is all hard. More pus seems to be coming out. He changes the anti-bio's again and says that she must go back to hospital when the course of antibio's is finished- for more Xrays, and possibly and operation under GA to remove some of her cheekbone!!

Who'd have thought that all this could arise from one tiny scratch

Luckily she is insured!

Judging from the xrays, they are about 80% certain that it is not coming from a tooth..there is a definate small possibility of that though. I think that the second set of xrays will be checking this out..
