Cheeky/ridiculous posts you see on Facebook.

I think I'd have more sympathy with air b&b hosts, and I do mean that generally, if they didn't charge an enormous cleaning fee. I clean air b&bs. I know what I get paid and how much laundry costs are, and it isnt what is charged to guests. Far too many hosts make a profit on cleaning fees, so I do get why guests feel annoyed and/or entitled to leave a mess. Although saying that its very, very, very, very rare I see any issues. Sometimes it needs a decent clean, but a lot of times its just a quick run through. And I get all sorts of weird and wonderful things left in the fridge which I either eat or distribute amongst my neighbours :D

Saw an advert on an 'off grid living' FB page for someone to live in a horsebox on 25 acres of rewilding land, for the winter. You'll have a kitchen in the horsebox and access to a bathroom (but not in the box itself), no photos of the horsebox as they want to give the inside a lick of paint first. No smokers or alcohol drinkers. In exchange for help rewilding, planting trees etc. and some money. Comments were not favourable...

The worst guest my parents had at one of their holiday cottages was someone who (we think) used it as a pop-up brothel… Quite a mess. Unsurprisingly, the person who booked it disappeared off the face of the earth.

My parents had someone else who moved two entire bookcases, and the fridge, took photos of dust BEHIND these things, and then tried to claim their money back. When that failed, they started taking photos of leaves in the back garden. My parents had to politely had to explain that gardens may have the odd leaf in them in autumn 🤣

Imagine having to go to the toilet in the winter 🤣

Summarised

I took my horse to hound exercise and she over took everyone and I had no brakes, I only managed to stop her just before she got to hounds.

Does anyone have a nice horse than doesn't pull and has manners and you can ride my mare?

Yeah sounds like a great option.
Saw that one!

I shall never take an indoor toilet for granted again 🫣
After 2 years of having to use a chemical toilet (while we were building the house) I will never take any flush toilet for granted again! At one point the builders installed a temporary flush toilet in a little shed -type thing. Within a week it had evolved its own ecosystem- I swear there were species of spiders in there that had never previously been discovered. It was horrendous- but it was still better than the chemical toilet in the caravan!

Just like everyone round where I lived as a kid. Ooutside toilet at the end of the yard , take a torch and watch for the spiders.
In the winter, my grandmother used to keep a storm lantern in the outdoor privy, left lit overnight mostly to take the chill off the air and so stop the water from freezing.
I knew several elderly ladies who preferred to use the outdoor privy in the daytime and evening, rather than climb the stairs to the bathroom.

I saw this too, she said in the comments she had a couple of potential options though come from the advert so it may have worked

We had a paraffin lamp in it in cold weather to stop it from freezing. I remember though in the winter of 62/3 in the cold stretch, my dad using a blowtorch to try and thaw it out 😮

This is super, super common but tends to only be on specific pages. The accommodation can be nice or grotty, or can just be space to put your campervan/caravan and you generally do 3 to 5 hours a day work or pay rent. It really isnt a bad offer at all. Similar accommodation round here was advertised for £900 a month. So that sort of offer starts to look very good to a lot of people.

I feel ill just thinking about the chemical toilet. One of the lowest points of the house build was having to empty the chemical toilet in gale force winds and the wind whipped round and changed direction part way through the emptying process. Let's just say that I had to throw those leggings away, they never recovered. 🤢
For this reason I don't think I could take on living in a van even if I was paid a good deal of money to do so. Even if it was in the most stunning location. Even if it came with free horses.
I've drawn the red line as far as toilets are concerned and there's no going back!🙂

Anonymous post on BE FB asking for business ideas that the equine industry is lacking. Firstly think of your own ideas to make money.
Secondly someone has commented
“Staff who want to work”
You just instantly know that person is an ar*e to work for just from that statement.
How about "employers who are prepared to pay decent wages"?

I saw this and also thought - great, take a bunch of people who already pay fortunes for their hobby to give you ideas for getting them to spend more of it. Do we at least get shares?

I have an idea!! Please send it on.

Fluorescent/ reflective feed supplement that safely passes through a horses digestive system and makes poo picking in winter (for those of us with an office job during daylight hours) a lot easier!

Or how about, electric fencing with a 2nd switch that powers a string of lights attached to your electric fencing. You could light up your paddock!

Then you'd get to the office and someone would say 'why is your coat/hair/shoe glowing?'

I don’t think many people could survive that without alcohol.

Actually that would be quite good. Then it would be immediately obvious that the farmer has bent your earth stake into a U bend and flung it across the field while topping, because the lights would be out.

(I won't be forgiving or forgetting this one for at least five years - I am investigating the possibility of borrowing a tractor and doing the job myself from now on!)
