HENRIETTA Knight is about sell off more than 400 lots of racing equipment ranging from schooling fences and brush hurdles to shaving forks and snaffle bits, but stressed on Saturday that the auction should not be interpreted that she is aboutto end her 18-year career as a trainer.
The trainer forever linked with triple Gold Cup winner Best Mate has a penchant for acquiring racing accessories - her husband Terry Biddlecome says she is an irresistible shopper for such items - and as a result West Lockinge Farm at Wantage has a surplus.
The three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer said: This will be the third auction I've had here, and they seem to come around about every four years or so.
I'm always getting new equipment - Terry reckons I'm a compulsive buyer - and as we've rather too much here at the moment, another auction seemed sensible.
I'm certainly not giving up training, she added.
There'll be between 65-70 horses here this season, and that'splenty enough for us. We're selling the schooling fences and brush hurdles because we are replacing them with plastic ones from Ireland; they're used in point-to-points there, and I believe there will be a racecourse trial there quite shortly.
I've been impressed with them because they are far easier to move than the conventional fences and hurdles, and require less maintenance. Quite a few trainers are now using them in Britain and they seem very popular.
The proceeds from next week's sale will go towards the purchase price.
The auction, which takes place on Wednesday week and is being organised by Lambourn property agent Pilgrim Bond, will start at noon and includes a wide variety of horse rugs and blankets. Details can be found at pilgrimbond.co.uk.
Knight has not staged a public open day at the yard since the loss of Best Mate, but she will be hosting her annual owners' open day next weekend.
