I don't know Bonny but I am horrified to see that a five year old, 11 year old and now a 6 year old have all lost their lives at Cheltenham. All three fell, injured, destroyed. 1 on day one, and 2 yesterday on day three.

Heart breaking.

I know racing is important, people enjoy it immensely, etc, etc. but I just think its important to remember the other side of the story and pay respects to those beautiful horses: Shall we have one more, Minds Made Up and Born Patriot taken too soon in the name of sport.

I think people do care Birker, just not necessarily post about it. I won’t derail the thread but I do wonder what people think would happen if racing was to stop…

It left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth on Wednesday when everyone was raving about the first race and that beautiful 5 yr old died and no one mentioned him, or he was conveniently side skirted like he didn't even exist.

He was a horse with a future, a beating heart, a clever brain and fast legs, a sentient being able to experience fear and pain and worry, and to experience love. He didn't deserve to end his young life is such a dreadfully tragic way.

I won't de rail the post anymore, I just wanted to say what I wanted to say. RIP darling.

I'm not suggesting racing stops but I honestly think we need to plough more money into understanding how these things happen and what we can do to do our best to prevent these unnecessary deaths.

Like the fascinating article by Sharon May-Davis https://www.espn.com.au/sports/horse/triplecrown08/columns/story?columnist=nack_bill&id=3399004 about the Northern/Native Dancer lines.

For the first time, I’ve actually not watched the entire festival. Unfortunately I’ve watched a few times this season and each time seen horrid fatalities. It is extremely saddening but I see both sides of the argument and have a bit more of a utilitarian view on it, I suppose.

however, not wanting to derail this thread, the first race today - vauban- what an engine! Completely flunked the last as he seemed to be spooking, but powered away up the hill and won easily. Well deserved and looks like he has a very bright future. I do love orange ponies ?

It is horrible such lovely horses have been lost. Has anyone heard an update on the one who was under observation on Wednesday? Was one of Gordon's?

Those rocking horses they showed were lush ??

Sadly, that race is overshadowed by what happened to Ginto, who is being attended to in front of the stands. That was not good to see. Sean O’Keefe the rider of The Nice Guy says “he jumped great, a great performance on the horse” as he rode his first ever Cheltenham race and it seems his first ever grade one, too. It’s all Mullins, but all thoughts with Ginto. Urgh, that’s so hard to watch.

I think Ginto has gone :(

Stop showing those idiots in the betting ring!

The sums of money they're putting on are obscene. 50k is way more than what I earn in a year
I haven’t seen a horse yet , well hardly. They are just a sideline to fashion and cash now.
So sad about Ginto. Will Gordon Elliott go to have a photo taken with him? Or does he only celebrate the odd death?

Did they ever say why Born Patriot had to be pts - they'd said he eventually got up, what was the injury that meant he couldn't be saved?

No announcements about Ginto yet?

Eurgh. That wasn’t nice. I’m not going to watch the gold cup until I know all are ok. I’m not feeling well today and don’t think my emotions can handle seeing another fatality.

Unfortunately it sounds like Ginto has officially been pts - no itv announcement though, just what's being said on twitter

There are absolute ar******* moaning about how Ginto has lost them a bet ????

They said one went in a horse ambulance after the first, hopefully it's ok

Gold cup and they've barely shown the horses....

Will we ever get to know the injuries of each horse pts?
IDK.

tbh, and this is brutal, it’s not a sport to watch if you object to fatalities. It’s part and parcel of the sport. That isn’t aimed at you specifically, more at earlier posters. I k ow I mentioned GE and a photo opportunity but that’s because I loathe him. Sadly, horses die racing.

I just wondered whether if they are investigated and if they had similar injuries whether things can be learnt to prevent further deaths.... that's why we should.
Other HHos have wondered so there is a natural curiosity, but if we can learn from them all the better.

If the injury is obvious then no. Unless the owner wants a further pm then no further investigation. If one drops dead of a suspected heart attack a pm is done. Sadly watching Ginto it was obviously a broken leg and we can't fix these when they are done at high speed. I do not know about the others but generally if one gets ambulance back and is pts later then it is either a pelvis injury that has burst a blood vessel or vein inside or its a broken shoulder, which again can't be fixed.

Right! Enough doom and gloom!

Fantastic Gold Cup! Aye Right was a wee star loving popping away out front for as long as he did! But wasn't A Plus Tard impressive!?!? You'd have to go back to the Kauto/Denmark days to find an easier Gold Cup winner! And to think he didn't quite get home in it last year. Just shows what another year of maturity and racing can do to a horse!
