Spent the day at Cheltenham today. WOW! Had so much fun. Was seriously down in funds.....until the last. Had Pedrobob at 18-1 tenner on to win! NICE! Had seen his last race and he fought hard so thought he should have an eachway chance there today. Thought I placed an each way but didnt look at the stub til after he won and found bookie had made a mistake and had put the tenner on not five each way! Happy days!

Sister's in-laws had their homebred running in the Foxhunters - aiming for back to back wins. A bad blunder at the first nearly unseated the jock. The replay mid race showed the stirrup iron swing over the other side of the saddle( as well as the jockeys leg). We were watching the race from the parade ring and listening to the commentator we thought May had fallen at the first. Never in my life have I been so nervous!
It was cool though - seeing Cheltenham from the winner's enclosure (2nd and 3rd are also unsaddled there) is probably something Il never get a chance to do again!
Will have a few photos (though most are taken from quite a distance) of Kauto Star coming up the track to the winner's enclosure after his win, Whyso Mayo in the parade ring pre race and the last half furlong of the County Hurdle. Cant get them up til I get home though - as Im in London for paddy's day!

Sounds like a fun weekend you're having - I guess you're already celebrating St. Patrick's Day!

I've never been to Cheltenham although it's only about 45mins away from me.

I'm guessing from the description of the jockey swinging his leg back into the saddle that the horse was Whyso Mayo who came a very close second to Drombeag.

If I'm right huge congratulations

.

Our friend's horse was in the race and managed to finish but the ground was too firm for him and the pace too fast. Very exciting race though!

Don't really get your post?? are you saying that your sister-in-laws homebred won the Cheltenham Foxhunters?? if so huge well done!!!

If not.. who did win??

No, I think she's saying her sister-in-laws homebred ran but unseated its rider.

Drombeag won (my bet) and Whysomayo (mums bet) was 2nd. Can't remember who was 3rd though!

Think her SIL's horse was second....was a bloody good recovery by the jockey, and who knows, without that error they might have got up?

Ok sorry! My sister's (soon to be)inlaws (ie her fiance's family) bred and own Whyso Mayo who finished half a length second. He won it last year and had won his next 3 races at that level at Punchestown, Thurles and Leopardstown. He runs on any ground though as Punchestown comes up fast usually (its in April) and Leopardstown he won by 12L in heavy.
I have to say I was surprised by just how small Whyso mayo actually is, hes definitely no more than 15.1 or 2hh! Hes a small horse but amazingly genuine. If he hadnt whacked the last fence when he seemed to have plenty in him to get up the hill, he could have done it. But that blow took it out of him. Still jockey did very well to get him back in contention after the first.
I believe he goes to either Fairyhouse (unlikely) or back to Punchestown for a rematch with Drombeag in April. Barring too many dodgey jumps I wouldnt be surprised if the results were reversed. Still, not too many small breeders (they have 2-3 mares) can boast having a homebred win and come second at Cheltenham in consecutive years. He is 10yrs now, but you never know he may have another craic at it since he only really matured at 8 and started winning point to points.

I had a soft spot for Ned Kelly when he was Gr £ level so it was lovely to see him come 3rd.

Do you not think the jockey lost the race rushing him up so quickly? I think hed have won by however far he liked if hed have held onto him a little longer - instead of busting him in one go.
Some racehorse though - absolute machine.

We actually thought the opposite vicijp. Trainer etc also agreed that horse was given every chance to get back in the race because the rider didnt try to get right back up there. But I do think that down the back hill he probably did push him too early and in my opinion the jockey froze two strides from the last when he saw Mayo was going to be wrong. He should have attempted to help him out. But then thats the difference between professional jockeys and amateurs isnt it?
But yeah, he has some heart for a little horse.
