new to this site so hello and can any one help! i have a TBxWesh who loves to gallop and jump but gets a bit too keen so i hack in a snaffle with running martingale and flash noseband, and SJ, XC in a dutch gag on the second ring which is fine in SJ but now not enough for XC as I'm having to fight him, so just trying him in cheltenham gag, so far so good but i'm not sure are you not supposed to use a running martingale with it as some say yes some say no will effect the action, also can you have a flash on or not? would be interested what you think also any one any good or reports on this sort of gag? only hacked out so far, will do fun ride on Sunday with jumps see how he goes before we compete thanks

I ride our black one in a cheltenham gag, no I dont think you are supposed to use them with a running martingale because the gag action encourages the horse to riase his head, the martingales action is to stop that.

I think its ia good bit, espec as our boy when he wants to go, tucks his head in and powers off, however in the gag he is much better and nowhere near as strong. I would say it is quite a harsh bit though as of course it does give a lot of poll pressure :

He has been in this bit for years and goes well in it.

Welcome.
A running martingale can be used as you are suppose to ride with 2 reins one on the snaffle & one on the running rein. Flash & grakles are fine to use with this bit. Mine goes in a waterford version with 2 reins running martingale attatchment to snaffle rein & a grackle noseband.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I ride my boy in a one with a flash and a running martingale for XC. He goes really well in it, and a bit is as strong as the hands that are using it! I use the martingale as he has a tendency to lower he his and power but then when we're jumping he can get his head so high i can't control it. I would reccomend riding with two reins as well.

hi to you all and thanks for your remarks! i have just done a 12 mile fun ride with loads of jumps in, and he went great! i love the way it reverts back to a snaffle when you relax pressure, i have to agree about the lightness of a riders hand and i believe i am not heavy handed, i only have one set of reins on bottom ring so will see how he goes!
