!!

Do prefer an event with some atmosphere but prepared to give Chepstow a go....Haven't been to either so wondering what the courses are like?

i went to the first event at houghton....when they ran intros/pn/novice
it is a fantastic venue i thought and can only imagine that they CCI* will be as lovely.

LOL i love mud, hate hard, he hunts all winter and can run through mud all day!! Only time i don't like it is in the SJ!!!

Not too worried about how competitive it is, he did Weston Park and Aldon last year and preferred the Weston type of course. As long as we improve i'll let mr fox pitt get his 21 dressage or whatever he fancies this year!!

I heard that Houghton was imposing, but that it rode well. There was a downhill combination that caught a fair few out but that was in the 2 star, so you can worry about that next year.

Chepstows really nice... XC is just a keep kicking bold horse job, not very stmospheric though i'm afraid... SJ is always v influential as the hills take it out of most horses on the xc... I have some pics (or theyre on EWW)... XC course there was a dog leg of fairly upright fences at the bottom of the hill towards the end of the course that caused p[roblems with people coming down the hill on the forehand, over setting up and killing the momentum, and the water aswel because they don't see it until they're about to jump the boat before it so a few slammed the brakes on at the last minute, and the farmyard at the end needs setting up well as the walls are upright, but its a v nice course

ive only been to chepstow and it was very nice but what i have heard about houghton its a lot more atmospheric (sp)

and i thought song was fit at chep for the int but the hill surly do take it out of them espec if you are riding for the time! so we only got to the water but as LPP says they do only see it at the last min and having a bit of a watre issue i suppose we wernt going to get much further!!

Saw so many run out of puff at Chepstow up the last hill. I thought was a lovely course, more of a bold course, although alot did have probs at the dogleg towards the end because of slipping/letting the horse run on and overshooting. The organisers try very hard with it though.

Houghton last year was a lovely event with a real big event atmosphere. The CCI* cross-country was beautifully built and very inviting but on the soft side - nearly everyone went clear and the time was easy to get, helped by good ground. I guess it will be ramped up a bit next year. The place is beautiful with trot up in front of the house etc. Temporary stables.

Haven't been to Chepstow for a few years but last time I went I would say it didn't have such a big event feel as Houghton. Again I would say the cross-country was a softer one-star than say Blair, or Hartpury. It's obviously an older course than Houghton and not so inviting - when I went there the water was quite spooky under trees. Horses are stabled in permanent stables. Lots of juniors there because of the under-18 champs.
