Chestnut Mares!

hi, i was wondering if any one else has a chestnut mare with some hanoverean in?? I have a welsh cob x hann and shes lovely to ride, but is an absolute arse to handle, especially when shes in season, she will try with meaning to kick you when you try to bring her in and is worse the longer shes been out! any suggestions would be greatly appriciated as im at the end of my tether!

Can you get some thing for mares in season and stroppy-ness?

If not, I think I'd install some basic manners in her and do a lot of inhand work until she realised in season or not, you are the herd leader and she will fall in line and do as she is told!

Horses that threaten you are no fun at all, nip it in the bud and do lots of ground work.
 
shes on the NAF magic calmer atm and when shes really bad the Equine America 1 aswell. shes has basic ground manners which are usually good but she has the worlds shortest attention span and if you havent got her attention you cant win. I think she does no that im boss but she gets very hot headed very quickly and will destroy any1 and ething in her path!
 
Umm, maybe you ought to expand on the 'basic' ground manners then.

Her attention span is because she is orange, like the goldfish, they go round the bowl once and have forgotten where they've been!! Sorry not helpful !

How old is she?
 
shes 6, nearly 7. shes doing BE and BSJA and can mange 2 concentrate at them probaably cuase theres so much going on she doesnt no wot 2 look at. mayb ill dye her bay!

Noooo!!!! An unbeliever!!!! Chestnut mares are lovely and just misundertood!!!! Mine is an angel and very clever and not at all stroppy, even in season... unless you try to pull her mane and then she's a bit more of a typical fiery redhead!



OP - Try hormonise if she's worse in season rather than a general stroppy mare one?
 
yer the pulling mane is a major issue!! solo combe or at least 3 pple and boots with steel top caps!
shes normally fine but its just the in season crap and she's a fussy eater and wont eat the feel good 30 stuff its been tried!
 
I have a chestnut Hanoverian x TB..... and she's a moody mare too, very spooky and silly.... but lovely to ride as well.....

Cant come upwith any suggestions as I just deal with it as and when it decides to do things, but when it comes to kicking I just get out the way sharpish!
 
I had a chestnut mare - no hanovarian in her though - she was IDxTB and an absolute star. Totally uncomplicated and not moody or difficult at all - couldn't tell when she was in season. I miss her.

I have a chestnut han x TB mare!!!

And she is the most difficult of my horses so far but i mainly put that down to her being young.

She is also lovely to ride but on the ground she can be a little horror!!! Nothing nasty in anyway she just tries to push her luck i think sometimes and if she is in a panick then she will mow down whatever is in her way. She also puts holes through the stable walls if the other horses go out before her.

You wouldn't be able to tell if she was in season or not though coz she is just a little nutter all the time and is never moody.

She sounds like one I worked with that would kill you in the stable, she was a TB point 2 point horse and I dreaded even just changing her rugs as she would have you both ends! Once you were on her back though she gave in and was a super calm mare, even if she did try biting your foot as you mounted!! The other two chestnut mares I owned were pretty much the same, one was a chronic rearer, the other a chronic bolter and the rearer used to rear whilst being led if she decided she didn't want to do something (she was also TB). I never used to be so prejudiced towards chestnut mares until I owned and worked with a bad few..all of which seemed to be chestnut!!

i have a stroppy mare when in season... i use stoppy mare by dodson & horrell. all herbal, looks nice and slowly reduces the length and messyness of seasons! fab stuff
 
To be honest a lot of it is probably my fault as i am too soft and let her get away with quite a lot of things unless she has over stepped the mark like barging me or stamping on my foot etc.

She is quite good and will listen if i raise my voice and growl at her. If she doesn't then a quick slap usually does the trick as she hates being smacked. She may try again a few mins later but i growl again and thats usually a good enough reminder.

She is getting better but she is just super hypo all the time but i actually like her like that although i must admit sometimes it is tiring.
 
Well, I have the best of all worlds....I have a chestnut Hannoverian mare, white face and four white socks. I must admit I get a bit scratchy when I hear people say "oh its a chestnut mare" if they see her do anythng less than 100 %obediant, but if they watch a bay gelding spit the dummy and throw his toys no-one ever says " oh its a bay gelding!"
I have always owned mares, I love them to bits, although I do have a gelding who has been fabulous. Mares are like stallions as they are "entire" horses.
If you have ever suffered from PMT you may understand why some mares are affected by being in season but I have never ever had a problem with a mare in season....and I do wonder if its down in part to the owners attitude? Its just a thought not an accusation.....I don't anticipate season problems, and in the (ahem) 30 years I have owned horses not once have I had trouble with a mare. Could be I have just been lucky...
Equally I treat high and gale-force winds as though they are no different to a sunny day when it comes to schooling...consequently I can ride either of my horses (except for the blind one) in any wind and they are not the least fazed, useful at outdoor shows. Again its a matter of attitiude.
My Hano is a joy to live with...she is kind and easy to handle and well mannered. She is not always easy to ride, and requires tact and a sense of humour but she is never malicious and once she understands what you want of her, she really tries hard.
Just my two-pennorth from the chestnut-mare-with-all-the-markings-they-say-you-should-never-have side of the fence......
 
i must say i was so upset with my chessy mare ...then i bought a sweetener dispenser from morrisons and started clicker training her .....in 2 days she will reverse,walk calmly,lift her foot when asked. 2 days ago she was bolting round the field with me still attatched.....yeeee for morrisons...................................i did however study the tecn before trying it

i love chestnut mares, had one when i was about 12 til iwas about 16, 13.2 nf, had the white leg and everything, but she was a sweetheart, a bit 'lively' to ride, but only because she was green, i had great fun on her, and never fell off her, not for lack of her trying, jumping was catleaping etc!
 
i have had two chestnut mares and would never have another. they were both difficult, fiery and mental. i know some people love them but not for me. i prefer to have a mare than a gelding but not chestnut. i must also add that i have never had a problem with any other colour horse/pony
