I always remember someone telling me the Chestnut mare Rhyme :

1 white sock keep her for a day
2 white socks send her far away
3 white socks give her to a friend
4 white socks keep her till the end.

Both my chestnut mares have 4 white socks

All horses i had Apart from one (dun) was chestnuts! one was true chestnut mare... she was awful to start with but became wonderful friend and trusty jumper, sadly i lost her 4 years ago after 7 years of owning her. I now have another chestnut but he's gelding and have 4 white socks!.... He's also wonderful boy.

i am trying to think of all the chesnut mares ive ever known now......
1 was evil cow kicked and bit
another - nasty streak

my girl is lovely - stroppy but thats just mareishness for you
another chesnut mare at my yard is too lovely

i think its just a myth !!

Love them.

Had 6 chestnut mares, and all were lovely. No issues with mareishness, though neither did I with the dun, or the 2 bays.

The only difference I've found with them as opposed to mares and geldings of a different colour is that they are more sensitive and easily upset - as was the Chestnut gelding I had.

But treat them kindly and sensitively and they'll love you forever

i used to have a chesnut mare on loan before she was sold. and whilst she was stressy when stabled, and used to box walk she was deffinately not evil, she was just typical TB! she didnt have a malicious bone in her body and would try he heart out for you

She wasnt as affectionate as some horses but if found that in general mares arent quite as affectionate anyway

your friend shouldnt be put off though!

Whilst mines not a mare, hes chesnut and hes the sweetiest friendliest horse you could meet.
