Ive had mares of varying colours. I cant say that the chestnut ones have been more tricky/live up to the stereotype at all. My best / favourite horse ever has to be my dear old Asha, a fabulous 15.2 ID chestnut mare. She was the best

Amber was a stereo-typical Chestnut mare but Lottie (bay) is exactly the same. They do have similar breeding so I imagine it's that, not her colour.

i wish more people would attribute personality/temperament more to breeding than colour. In fact i wish more people would look beyond colour and look whats infront or underneath them. See so many people now breeding for colour without any regards to inbreeding/dodgy stallions / ungraded/temperament/confo et etc. Sorry rant over.

Colour and gender means nothing, (well, unless you're breeding!) just judge her on her training and temperament.

Had a lovely chestnut mare in for training and sales livery last year, honestly a far nicer horse than i could ever afford myself so working with her was a real treat but hardly anyone would touch her. Now living up in Scotland living a lovely life and behaving just as I described her, ie: fabulously. Her new owner adored her personality and snapped her up when so many before dismissed her.

I have 7 horses on the property right now, no chestnuts at all, granted, but by far the trickiest ones are the two older geldings!

Riding school I learned at had a small one - she was fun to ride and like any other pony.

My mare was in with one for a year - the sweetest little pony I knew.

There's one on my current yard - chestnut mare Arab. I love her. I've ridden her and handled her. A little spicy but a very, nice nature.

I'd go look at the horse herself. Forget the colour (unless it's grey . Never again a grey to clean), the breed and the gender.

I love them.

Some people just don’t get on with mares of any hue, that’s a real thing. Mares don’t suit a dictatorial handler/rider at all, they won’t have it.

I love a chestnut mare I loaned a super Welsh/Arab mix chestnut mare as a teen, she was quite food sensitive and rider sensitive but other than that she's was the ultimate all-rounder. Hack out alone all day, local agricultural shows showing, pony club etc. she took me from riding school to popping round 3 ft 6 courses. She used to stretch like a cat every morning. Falling asleep at a busy show...

I seriously love a ginger:.. beautiful and easy to keep looking smart and a lot less boring that a bay… (added advantage my husband doesn’t seem to notice the difference between a ginger and a bay so didn’t notice when I added the last one!)

Same . Personally I don't think you can beat a Chestnut, Welsh mare, but I get they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Mine is a bit of a diva, but polite and respectful with it. I've had to earn that respect though. It's a huge ego boost that I am able to live up to her expectations

I have a Welsh chestnut Mare and she is the sweetest thing. Such a lovely nature.
She is very polite about wanting a 5000 word essay on why she should do anything but if I let her think it's her idea then generally she would walk into battle for me.

I have never seen her put her ears back or raise a leg at a human ever and very rarely another horse.

OMG it's brilliant! It was all dug out, membraned, eco gridded & then filled with limestone. Easy to poo pick, drains better than concrete, not slippy, if I keep scraping a scoop or two of mud off night & morning, that keeps on top of it. They live on there in winter as my fields are sloping clay and completely useless. Legs & feet stay dry, no muddy rugs, it's heaven! It's the only way to manage on clay!

I love a chestnut mare, they are fabulous. The stereotyping that goes on with horses drives me mad. When anyone starts with typical mare, tb, Welsh, arab, chestnut mare etc. I immediately think less of them, there is no such thing.
