A foal was born chestnut
He was expected to have a high chance of turning Palomino
At 18 months old pony is still chestnut
Will he now stay chestnut please?

I would say so. We bred a mare from a welsh sec b light chestnut flaxen mane and tail to a Arab stallion palomino and the filly was born spitting image of her sire only light chestnut like her mum. :)

He either has the cream gene or he doesn't. I know that some palominos can have a chestnutty foal coat, but by 18 months I think that it's pretty certain that he's not got the cream gene. You could DNA test for cream if you want proof of his cream status.

Faracat will correct me if I m wrong but to breed for palomino most use a cremelo dam for the cream gene and a chestnut sire, your mare does not look like she carries the cream gene, I have no idea what colour you would call her but she is lovely anyway, do you have a picture of the foal?

EB - he sounds like he was lovely.

PVB - yes you can guarantee a palomino foal if one parent is chestnut and the other is cremello, it doesn't matter which way round it is though as the colour is not sex linked (IE a chestnut dam and cremello sire works equally well as a cremello dam and chestnut sire).

WD - I can't see the link, it just takes me to the google home page.

Dam is Stoak Topaz, on google images she is the first pic that comes up.

Foal was chestnut on body with pale creamy legs

Sorry i cant post pics from my phone :(

She looks like a sooty palomino. So with a chestnut sire, there was a 50% chance that the foal would inherit the dam's cream gene, but it sound's like he didn't, as he's chestnut at 18 months old.

Perfect thank you all.

The dams foal this year is definitely cream - the other half of the 50% lol.

As i said i am pleased with pony, I coveted him as a foal so have snapped him up now - just surprised to see him still chestnut!

See I am learning Faracat your posts about colour are paying off :)

WD - you're going to have to post some photos of him now we know that you coveted him - he must have something special about him and you need to share! LOL. :D :p

PVB - :D :D :D

Im picking him up today Faracat so will post pics!

He just 'got' me in the heart as a foal - i must have looked at his pic a thousand times on the stud website and was so sad when i saw him sold but being realistic no way could i cope with a foal, when he came up for sale recently i just felt in my gut it was the right thing to buy him.
