Hi all,

What stallions are out there currently that are chestnut? For 14.1hh mare (my avatar actually) who is a cross of Welsh, TB, Friesian and Irish. Because of this I'd quite like something pure bred but as am being so specific re colour will look at crosses too.

- must be suitable for size of mare, so nothing over 16hh and I am quite short so smaller is better.
- no warmbloods, they just aren't my thing.
- must breed calm relaxed foals.
- if possible exceptional hind leg conformation as mare and her mother are both quite straight through the hocks.
- must do AI which will be done by top vets at my home.

I want the foal for low level riding club stuff, so doesn't need to be a world beater, just a nice person who can do a jolly fun ride one day, a bit of dressage the day after and a tiny clear round/xc the day after that.

*Disclaimer, I have my horses at home (see all my property threads) and have not nor would not ever sell a horse should circumstances change. This foal is for me and as the 4 field ornaments I currently have attest I will keep foal however it turns out while they are happy and not in pain. I know breeding for a high chance particular colour is not everyone's idea of sensible but it's my choice knowing it will limit my options.

If you’re open to a PBA the Vlaqc stud have some beautiful chestnuts as I recall.

Open to PBA or full Arab as long as fairly calm. I tend to hack for hours when so an arab wouldn't be a bad idea 🤔

Is the mare chestnut?
You could consider something like this, he's PRE so would breed a bit of type into the foal. Not sure if Spanish is your thing though? https://www.eclipsestud.co.uk/

Oh he's nice. My former neighbour has a lovely spanish horse so no against them at all. I'll have look at his details. Mare is bay with an ee gene

what colour are you going for in the foal? A chestnut?

Yes, even with a chestnut stallion the chance is only 50/50 as mare is bay. Her mother was chestnut so she has one ee gene but dad didn't have an ee gene hence mare being bay. Am trying to maximise chance of a ginger baby 🤞

That’s a really good call . I met him at the stallion parade . Just the most amazing temperament. More gelding like . Very cuddly and boy could he move .

You could consider Bell Tower Major Tom? 15.2h Irish Draught?
My cob's grandsire was Winmaur Sergeant Pepper - the sire of 'Major Tom'. My horse is chestnut 14.3h (out of a 15h bay mare) has very good hind leg movement, is calm, easy to keep and lives out all year round. Might be worth a look!

This is a good shout to mix in with the OP. Possibly also one of the racing Arab sires perhaps although they are likely less proven as all rounder sires

Edited to clarify my comment is for Marcus Aurelius!

I think he’s move to America

There is a lovely liver chestnut race stallion on Arabian lines at the moment, his a really nice horse alot of them are French bred.

The op could buy him and breed lots of nice babies😂

Some of the ones that have raced can be a bit nuts, my friend used to show one that had raced and she used to have to lunge and ride him for ages before her class.

This was one I was going to suggest too. A pity Mookie is not chestnut because he would suit too.

Bumping incase anyone has any suggestions.

I've emailed Bell Tower stud re Major Tom and awaiting reply, but incase he is now in US with no frozen available, any other suggestions welcome.

If you like small chestnut Irish draughts then there is Hillviewfarm Trevelyan
Another lovely chestnut draught is Castlerise Twist of ginger , I think he’s a bit taller though at 16.1 . But he’s blooming lovely

Oh he's rather nice, 16.1 is too big really as I'm 5'2 with dodgy knees and mare is 14.1 so am hoping for 15.2 max for the foal but ideally 15hh. I'll have a look for Hillviewfarm Trevelyan
