Hi.
I'm interested in a second hand Cheval Liberte 2003 trailer, manufactured in 2007. I've had this make before, some years ago and really liked it, but had the Gold version.
My question is does anyone know what the payload is on this trailer as we have 2 pretty big horses?
Many thanks.

Hi, I'd be looking for the cheval 2003xl if you've got big horses. I can't comment on the 2003 as I haven't owned one, but I did have a 2003xl that I will forever regret selling - it was all fibreglass, very sturdy and light and the horses travelled well. The "jockey" door was basically full height/width that a horse could exit through, as well as a front ramp. It had a tack storage bit at the front that I took out. I used to travel my horse and my friend's great big 17hh Irish Draught mare with no issues.

From what I've seen of the 2003 the wooden sided ones are prone to the panels rotting out and needing replacing, they just look a bit flimsier/cheaper than the 2003xl.

Sorry I can't answer the question but I wouldn't even make a phone call about it as you are likely to be really disappointed with it. The Gold models are infinitely superior , especially suspension wise.
Maybe a shetland would be comfortable in a standard model but not a big horse.
If you do buy the one you are inquiring about remember that one day you will need to sell it on, and you will have difficulties selling it.

Two bigger horses probably wont fit in a cheval liberte. One would probably just fit with no partitions but I would be worried about the headroom. The XL version is the one you want if you have bigger horses.
Ive just bought a trailer so looked at pretty much everything in the last month 😊

As I keep telling everyone:

  • Go onto www.horsetrailersales.co.uk and click onto used trailers.
  • All the old trailer makes will be displayed on the left hand side.
  • Go onto Cheval Liberte and it will show all the trailers in that range
  • Click onto whichever trailer you want info about and it will show all the specifications for that trailer.

Alternatively speak to Frank Smith on 01580 830088

Mine was made from fibreglass, I don't think any of the 2003xl ones came with wooden sides anyway!

The web site for Cheval Liberte trailers does have the weight of the trailer & also weight it can carry.
Double Touring Country double horse trailer :-
  • Unladen Weight: 850kg
  • Gross Weight: 2600kg
Touring XL double trailer

  • Unladen Weight: 950kg
  • Gross Weight: 2600kg
I bought a trailer many years ago & looked at Cheval Liberte. I wasn't impressed with the build quality. I ended up buying a Bateson Deauville. The horses loaded without any issues. It was light & airy & it was silent when towed, no rattling that so many others do. There were saddle racks in the front that were handy.
