Cheval Maxi 3 vs Ifor eventa

Hi all,

I Have posted in here as felt this might sit with those out competing/training.

I am looking for peoples opinions between the build quality of the Cheval maxi 3 and Ifor eventa trailer.

I have actually owned both, albeit I only had the eventa a few weeks as it travelled so badly on the back of our short wheel based defender when I picked it up that I sold it almost immediately.

I then bought a Cheval maxi 3 which has been great, but the hinge on the ramp has just gone and there is some bubbling. So, Im questioning the build quality now and considering whether I should go back to an eventa and whether it would travel better on the back of my pick up which I now have.

Obvious other benefits to the eventa are the living which is super handy for me as I do stay away.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Well, I'd contact an Ifor outlet and ask to do a test drive, explain how it was previously with different tow vehicle.
That then might help you decide, particularly if it still isn't a good drive for you.

I have a maxi 3 but an older one and don't have a ramp just a step up with barn doors and quality has been good. Also tows the best of any trailer I have towed. I don't like herringbone with the ramp as just worry about horses at the back. I know you can pull the screen down but it's not the same as a solid door.

Mine is now 10 years old. My one moan would be where step up is, it's gone a bit crap with rust but has been trodden on a lot. I have old door handles so you can't open them from inside. I prefer the grooms area on new ones as mine has curved floor.

I have never liked the eventa. They freak me out slightly as so light with their body so I worry about what would happen if you were hit and I don't think they are super horse friendly for size. Fine with smaller. I also think as an everyday trailer they are too big. Tbh I don't use my maxi for everyday as have an old ifor 511 for day to day as much smaller.

What about the Cheval with living?

Thanks for your comments. If I needed something with living at the price of the Cheval with living, I would go back to a lorry. Just been trying to minimise outgoings by downsizing to a trailer and not having the running costs of a lorry!

A friend has had two Chevals, both a two horse and the larger one. Both purchased new and both have had fairly major problems, one had cracked wishbones/springs? Both times it took a long time for the dealer to get the replacement parts needed. They won't be buying another one!
