My pony is a persistent fence chewer. Why? Everything is creosoted (real creosote not the pretend stuff) & she has a balanced diet to suit her lifestyle/needs with ad lib forage - out all day, in at night with hay. Now her gelding friend has also started chewing. They have a variety of hedges, bushes & trees to chew in their field but seem to prefer creosoted post & rail fencing! Am I missing something out of her diet?

Mine does exactly the same, like yours he has a balanced diet so I honestly think that after all this time of him doing it it's either boredom or just habit. It seems to be only one type of wood that they chew so perhaps it just tastes good to them? Since he's moved in with a bigger herd of mares he's stopped though so I honestly think it would have been down to boredom as when he was doing it before he was all on his own.

My new one is doing it as well. The older wood seems easier to chew so she's wrecked that. Have elec fencing on it all now. Hadn't thought about giving her logs to chew on. Isn't it bad for them to ingest splinters of wood?

One of my mother's geldings has been a beaver since he was a baby. Fences, walls if he can, bridles if you don't watch, ropes, blankets, fly masks... It's nothing to do with his diet, he's just mouthy. She used to give him those horse balls to play with, they last for a little while and keep him off the fences.

Pony could just like how it feels if he's not chewing anything else.

Have given them logs to chew on - ignored. Teeth are checked every 6 months - due again May. They both have their own Topspec Feed Balancer. She has a salt lick in her stable which she loves & another one by the water trough in the field which they ignore. I'll try adding salt to her feed & see if that makes a difference. Thanks for all your help.
