My horse has the most annoying habit of chewing his leadrope.

When he is tied up he will chew on it.
Also when being led out to the field he will take hold of it and chew it.

Its getting very annoying having to keep replacing lead ropes!!

I try and take it out of his mouth when he does it but he just picks it up again.
I dont like to get annoyed at him because he isnt doing it in an aggressive manner - he likes to just pick it up and carry it in his mouth and have a wee chew!

Suggestions anyone?

have a piece of leadrope he can carry in his mouth whenever you lead him and attach another spare leadrope to wherever you tie him up. My pony did this!! its reli quite funny though

Can you get one of those lead ropes which are part chain and part rope for leading him in and out so he can only grab hold of the chain?

My friend makes her ropes by plaiting bailing twine together to tie her horse up as she does exactly the same thing

I've known horses do this to clean/floss their teeth, my pony does it sometimes when I bring him in in the summer, he gets all the bits out from in between his teeth!!

My mare does this especially if tied up & not getting any attention. I usually tell her to "drop it", leave it alone or put it down like you would a dog & this works a treat !!

Out TB doesn't chew the lead rope but often sets himself free to wonder around the yard, my horse 18hand CB just stands & looks in wonder at the little TB !
Plus he holds the rope like a dog on his way to the paddocks ?

Don't buy a chain remember teeth....

Drop it works for my mare. She has never grown out of it though and is now 9. Its a bit like a stress reaction ie if she is waiting for her tea on anticipating something she does something with her mouth like chew leadrope, lick door or runs her teeth up the rails. We are currently using a nylon 'dog lead' type rope which she doesn't seem to like to chew

My friend has used one of these:
Web Lead Rope with Chain
on both her youngsters (one is now 6) and they have never had problems with their teeth - it discouraged them for chewing it as it wasn't soft. She didn't tie up with it, just used it for leading in and out so they had nothing to get hold off.

Spread tabasco sauce or very strong vinegar all over your ropes. My 2 year old doesn't like to chew his ropes so much anymore...

my 4 year old does this - when you put the headcollar on he gets the dangling rope between his teeth - doesn't do it whilst being led or tied up...I just drape the rope accross his shoulder so he can't get it and it is happeneing less and less tho....
