my horse has habit of chewing the reins as i'm leading him to montain block or in fact leading him anywhere in bridle. if i try hold them really tight away from his mouth he tucks his head in trying to get them and snaps air if i tell him off he gets really upset and fussy.its not a massive problem in the scheme of things, but annoying still! would an anti chew liquid thing ruin my reins?

My horse has started grabbing her rein to chew when she is bored too! I have just been keeping an eye on her and trying to keep them out of the way so she cant grab them. I think its a boredom thing. Usually when i'm stood in the arena having a chat while sitting on her she'll try to grab one when the reins are loose. Annoying though.

my horse does the same and its driving me mad. I will interested to see your replys.
At the moment Im using a Myler with hooks and he cant seem to grab the reins like he used to although he does try. He does it with a lead rope too when leading him to the field.
Ive tried telling him no, smacking him and saying no but he just cant help himself.
He also tries to grab any part of the bridle when Im putting it on. Aaaagh

I don't lead my horse by taking the reins over his head. I always leave the reins on his neck and hold them together under his chin. He can't reach them this way. If I leave him tied up the reins are under the stirrups and the rope clip is on the rein rings so he can't reach them anyway.

Mine too! Usually when leading to/from school or to mounting block when going out for a hack. He will also do the same to lead rope when coming in from field just when we first set off in. Someone told me it might mean he was weaned too early, don't know if that's true or not might be a load of baloney. He's not mouth-y in any other way.

Me neither, he sort of tosses his head sidewards and just grabs them.
He hasnt always done this, Ive owned him 6 years and reckon it started about a year ago.

My mare occasionally grabs her leadrope when she is tied up and any part of her bridle when i'm putting it on. Usually the buckle of her noseband. I put it down to boredom mainly and playfulness. My mare is very lippy but doesnt bite so she likes investigating things with her mouth.

Maggie's mouth is like a giant magnet - everything seems to end up in it! Her expensive Albion nubuck reins have teeth marks all over and the other day she picked up her saddle by the teeth (the one second I wasn't watching her) and threw it on the floor. It is now scratched.

Not sure if you can do anything other than keep an eye on them... they don't mean any harm, but it is pretty annoying when they ruin things!

Oh and recently somebody bought flowers for us because we had been looking after her horse - they were miles away from Maggie's stable but she still somehow managed to get hold of them, rip open the cellophane and eat them :-(

I have one that does this to, and he can untie a lead rope as well. Lol when i first saw your post i wondered why you'd want to chew your reins.

must be something about Maggies - mine chews anything she can get hold of. When it's her harness it's fine as it's nylon, but as she's being ridden at the moment, she's managed to chew the throat lash and browband of her bridle (I'd bent down to put her boots on, tack was on the door supposedly out of reach where she was tied up) the stirrup leathers, reins... I could go on
