My boys are chewing the paddock fence and soon will be through it if i don't stop them.
Last year I creosoted (sp) it and put tape along the top but that now doesn't seem to be working and its only on two certain areas and I think the wood is weaker in these areas anyway.

Do any of the shop bought sprays/paints work? Is there any home made recipies?

(Also in New Lounge)

I used to put chillie or mustard mixed with oil on my stable door when I had a wood chewer.

However if out in the field I would query are they missing something in their diet or are they bored?

Maybe put a lick out?

Ive tried everything! Spoke to my vet becuase all of mine do it, some more than others. she said it wouldnt be a deficiency (cnt spell) cus they all do it its a bad habbit! none of the sprays work. the cribbox sticky stuff (like tarr) u put on worls but nightmare to do whole fence. vet said get huge tub of vaseline and mix in curry powder and chilli powder. im get to try it ive electicuted top rail. theyve now moved to next rail down. now doing that one moving onto 3rd and 4th rail!!! NIGHTMARE! and also the posts the go into the ground so my fencing looks like a death trap going to try the vaseline!

I use electric standoffs - pigtails - to run an electric wire about 8" inside the fence. It has the added advantage of keeping the horses from 'chatting' excessively over the fence.

I have heard that using rails that have been pre-treated with pressure driven creosote deter them from being eaten but they are more expensive that standard rails.

we have a mixture of rustic rails which the horses love gnawing on.....all of them!!

Now I buy the planed ones (smooth) and been tanalised, the horses don't touch these at all!!

horse poo, mixed with creosote and if you can find it fox scat... Works a treat, but you need a mask to apply and obviously rubber gloves and overalls.

This is why i said to OP to put electric on the inside of the fencing Not on the top as they just chew the next ones down , as you have found out :(

my horse has never chewed wood , but i have electric fencing all along the inside of my fields , more to stop eating over the fencing and ruining it.
