My small lurcher whippet x keeps chewing her left toes or claws with her molars on an evening when were settled. She doesn't seem lame on it and we did try clipping her nails cos they looked a bit long, but that made no difference. She is very active when we go for walks and runs everywhere, but the chewing is always the left toes/claws.
Obviously we've looked as best we can but can't see anything between her toes or around her claws.
It doesn't seem to get any better or worse and b/c it's not bothering her any other time or looks sore we haven't seen the vet yet, but she's due for boosters so thought I'd ask here for any ideas first.

If the vet cannot find anything, query diet, a contact allergy (pesticides, floor cleaner etc, esp anything containing pine) or just self-comforting/obsession (like licking a spot on the floor or tail chasing)
TBH if it is the latter, I would try and snap her out of it and distract her, give her a nice raw bone from the butcher or a stuffed frozen Kong, it is a useless behaviour which can become quite self-destructive if left unchecked. Don't just sit and watch her doing it, if you have to be on her all the time trying to snap her out of it and keep her occupied with something else, I would do it.

Funnily enough, she used to lick a spot on the carpet in the evening but I stopped her doing that, so now she chews her paw. You think she probably is doing that instead?
Thanks, I'll stop her doing that and see how we go on.

Hi

My border collie does this. Its an obsession, attention seeking thing which we distract him from like CC said with a bone or toys.

Gets quite sore if left and the slurping noise he makes is just disgusting! :p

Hope you can stop it.

Catherine
