My little JR pup is now 4 1/2 months old and growing fast. Hes so good in every aspect comes to call, sits understands NO, toilet trained (99% of the time) leads on a lead well goes off on walks well, brill with other dogs. BUT he loves to chew he goes in a crate when im not there but like the other week, they travel in a mesh (or they did) cage in the car i went in the shop 10 minutes later he was out through a massive hole, he then chewed the foam ut my daughters car seat the extentable lead in half and the bag of crisps ont he front seat a and then was just about to start on my ciggies when i came out!!!. He also chewed the collar off my older dogs neck!!!! And managed to get the boot liner through the new metal cage in the car and chew the edge off that, he also dicustingly likes the crutches of knickers!!! He even stole my daughter furry slipper off her foot to chew (although that was rather amusing):p;)

Is this just a faze ive got to wait for him to grow out off whiles hes teething ect. I Know puppies chew but this seems extreme. Quite often when poo picking i notice very colourfull things in his poo!!!! He doesnt get left for lenghs of time walked lots aswell as been at the yard!!! Ive got different chews for him in the house - ive got raw hide chews, various dog/pup toys suitable for chewing.

Anyadvice or just wait for him to out grow it and be vigilant??

He is teething, bear with it.
Bin the rawhide, give him proper bones, chicken wings, thighs, drumsticks etc.
Try and make as much as you can (car crate/cage/collar) metal if you don't want it chewed. I know a lot of people don't like choke chains but you can get them in a half check or keep them on the dead link so they don't close fully, with a large/flat link collar, you can attach the lead to any two links you like and it just acts the same as a normal collar.

Just keep offering alternatives. Mini Kongs, Starmark foam balls, have very pleasing textures to a dog, also try frozen carrots and parsnips. You will need to WATCH your dog at all times, as if they were a toddler, if you don't want things destroyed. Also think about crate training in the house.

Ok i thought proper bones but my friend said no raw hide was better but to be honest hes not really interested in them, i will get him some real bones, he will be a happy pup!!:) I will also get a few of those others you metioned.

Re the collars there ok when im about, as i usually walk them in harnesses as there JR and tiny i prefer them for some reason also means no slipping of collars as older dog is a master at that!!! But i have collar with tags on in case of escaping and he chewed it off his neck while they were in there bed!!! I was in the room thinking he was sleeping as its round the corner of the sofa, they now dont get left alone with collars unless its while walking or at the yard!!! Yes he is crate trained at home and when i first got him while i was making dinner, showering ect he went in, as hes got a bit older ive lessoned it to while im out or in bed. But maybe i ought to start with never been unattended at all. Its just hes so destructive so quickly. Will take a pic of dog toy left for 20 minute in cage for him while cleaned car and upload!!! Not that i mind that as dog toys are supposed to be chewed and id rather that than my knickers!!!!:D

Thanks for suggestions.:)

My young one is ten months and he is in the crate if I am going to be more than ten minutes, he just has to be biting or chewing something all the time :p
Raw (NOT COOKED!) bones are great for their gums and teeth, rawhide is just bleached skin, nothing really in it for them. My friend has just brough home an eight week old puppy and he is chewing raw ribs already.

My OH's family have a JRT and I know how infuriating it can be (he now has a huge bit of board over his bedroom door which I will no doubt trip over tonight....to stop him from getting in and eating everything) but I do think the key is, as much unchewable stuff as possible, offer alternatives and if there is chewable stuff in the room, supervise or crate!

Just never assume they won't chew something the minute your back is turned, at this age :p

Ok so just just got to wait for him to outgrow it, theres now a metal cage in the car after the mesh one is now useless. Will get him some bones and other stuff tommorow. and be patient.

Some piccies.
One destroyed puppy toy, 20 mintues work!!!!

Oh my, what a cheeky looking boy he is:D:D
At this age whilet the jaw is developing they feel an over whelming urge to work it, in the wild dogs would chew all day (bones from dead animals) mostly inc the young, it is very soothing/calming/relaxing to chew, some dogs get more from it than other (he is obs one). Try to make sure anything expernsive/valuable/harmful is never left with him when he is alone and as CC suggests, alot of stimulating (pacifiers) for want of a better work, turkey drum stick (raw) larger bones he can really knaw on and the articifial gnaw bones for the car (very hard flavoured plastic) bones, and there are hard rubber based toys called (soothers) I think aswell as already suggested the kongs with frozen food in.

Ps, I would maybe steer clear of things he can actually destroy and swallow and become foreign bodies like the raggy rope in the picci.
Another Ps lol.......swap and change what u give (have a treat box) so he does not becomes bored with the same old chewey things day in and out.

Hehe he is a very cheeky boy, he is truley living up to the name my daughter named him, 'Cheeky Charlie' .

Yes going to stock up on puppy chewing safe things tommorow. Have removed all destroyable toys now, up untill today raggi toy was of no interest but like to leave something as otherwise he starts on his bedding!!! Monkey:D.

I do have the really hard plastic ones but they are of no interest:rolleyes:. I think its probaly more tastier if hes not supposed to have it.

I think its because ive never really had a a bad chewer ive been lucky so far but hes to the extreme will just have to be carefull till he outgrows it!!!

Thankyou.:)

I give mine cardboard boxs, make sure no stapples no celotape on them, let him destoy it and then into recycle bin. Makes a lot of mess but should not do any harm if swallowed.

Watch which bones you give. Avoid large weight bearing bones eg leg bones of cows/sheep as they are very dense and may break his teeth. Small chicken wings are good: hold at first so he doesn't inhale them in one go! You can bash them up to get him used to them. You can give them frozen so they last longer.

Lamb bones/ribs and pork ribs are good but if meaty, he may get the runs if unused to raw bones.

Never give cooked bones.

You can get teething 'keys' that have a tiny bit of give in them, very satisfying.

Stuff a kong with his normal food, carrot, meat paste, peanut butter and freeze before giving it to him. It'll double up as an interesting toy that distracts him from destroying everything.

Try a stag bar, natural and eminently chewable! http://www.puredog.co.uk/our-products.php

I actually re thought when I wrote larger, I have fed pancake (my cavalier) large turkey drum sticks since she was about 12 weeks lol, she stole her first and she loves them and they keep her entertained for hours, but I dont give her any other large bones to be fair, only chicken wings or thighs or chicken drumsticks.
The rawsters will keep you right:p:D

OP - Just to make you feel a bit better about the underwear obsession I will share the worst experience of my life with you :o

When my darling terrorist was teething she would destroy anything... pants, bras, tv remotes, phone chargers etc.
We were really carefull with closing doors etc to try to limit the damage she could cause but the house we lived in then was pretty shabby (rented) and some of the doors didn't fully close and a tiny terrorist could open them with a bit of body slamming.
The shabby house was on a VERY busy street with loads of kids / dog walkers going past / stood outside all the time.
One day i was watching telly and realised I hadn't had my feet chewed for a while so I ran off to look for the little darling.

I got to the bottom of the stairs and she zoomed past me, full of herself straight out to the garden carrying a very special grown up 'item'.:o

I spent 20 mins trying to corner her to get it out of her mouth:o She thought it was a fantastic game. I wanted the world to swallow me whole.

to summarise..... DO NOT LET THE LITTLE BEGGAR OUT OF YOUR SIGHT! haha :)
