chewing wounds on coronet band

One of ours came in with a soggy wound on her coronet band that she has taken to chewing. It doesnt look infected but its increased from 0.5cm to over a 1cm along her coronet band and looks like its swelling.

Ive put some camrosa on it to keep the flies out and shoved an over reach boot on it to keep her teeth out... but any ideas what else I can do?

Shes sound.
 
I had this on a horse and it turned out to be an absess that had headed up rather than down. a couple of days pouticing and it healed well. The horse was sound with no heat BTW
 
i would call the vet for some advice coz there is a diease of the coronet band can not think what it is called its better to be safe than sorry!
 
One of my horses had something similar years ago. He kept licking and chewing at his coronet and the wound was soggy as you describe it.

The vet stated that there was the presence of some bacteria in the soil that caused a reaction on the skin sort of similar to mudfever but summer equivalent. They persecribed an iodine ointment that unfortunatley stained his white socks a horrid brown colour, however it cleared it up very well and thankfully touch wood he hasnt suffered again. I would call the vet. In the meantime keep clean with hibiscrub and use aloe vera gel on it.

The disease you are thinking about is called Pemphigus, it's an immune disease that causes blistering to the skin or membranes. In Pemphigus Coronitis, it causes lesions to the coronet band.
I would keep a close eye on it, and if it doesn't heal within a couple of days then get the vet out.
