hey, i know some peeps on here are chicken experts so i thought i'd ask...

we've recently been bitten A LOT and have found a few fleas on us. now, i KNOW they are not from my dog (as he's frontlined regularly and i've checked him all over). they look like fleas, but are much easier to kill (can squash between fingers, not nails)...

as we've recently had a few new batches of chicks, we've been spending more time than usual in the chicken house...

can chickens have fleas (they are not red mites...)? if so, HELP! how do i kill them? bearing in mind there are 15 or so baby chicks in there (between 2 and 7 days old).

help....

Chickens can get fleas, but you can get powder to put over the chickens to kill the fleas... but you need to be able to go near the chickens first which is usually quite impossible. lol!

Never heard of fleas on chickens, only lice and mites.
Are you sure they are not fleas?

they look just like fleas... so much so that i rang my mum and accused her dogs of bringing fleas into the house... but they are easier to kill than the 'normal' dog/cat fleas... and they don't seem to jump as much/as far....

god, i'm itching just thinking about it. gross. x

there has been a lot of resistance to frontline recently reported so it may well be a dog. my mum has chickens and i thought they only get mites and lice.

You should be able to get the powder from most of the hardware shops/ farm animal shops etc. *fingers crossed* it will work!

I'm itching at the thought of it aswel! ahh!

I've never heard of Chickens with fleas either and I worked at the Domestic Fowl Trust for 6yrs,they are probably lice but they are host dependant anyway. If you want to de louse them use Johnsons flea powder.Don't use organic stuff it doesn't work.
