Do they come in sizes or are they one size?

One site i've looked on say one size and others said 5''

Also, ive never used one before can I use it with side reins, or will they not be neccessary?

Thanks

A chifney bit I believe comes in one size and is NOT I repeat NOT to be used for any sort of riding in, lunging, long reining or side reins!!! Please have a look on the internet and research what this bit is for before buying and using one! Perhaps you have made a mistake but if not, then you should not be buying one until you know what you are doing! No offence meant!
A chifney bit is a controlling bit used only for in hand handling of the horse. It is used to control a horse on ground that is prone to rearing or being bolshy. You need to be trained in the use of it or you will hurt yourself and more so your horse.

Definitely do not buy one unless you have been shown how to use it by someone who is experienced. Chifneys can cause horrendous damage to a horse's mouth and jaw. TBH there are very few reasons to ever use one, and certainly many better alternatives.

thanks for you help, I have used one before on a horse I had to turn out for some1 (he always had to be in it)

Its for my horse (see post walking in hand after rest) The only reason I asked about side reins is because im leading him in a normal bit with side reins atm and am just about keeping control, but I am not able to stop him rearing, didnt know if the bit was enough on it own (thought it was) but wasnt sure if side reins would help?

Any alternatives that sound suitable? Hes 17hh ISH!

Frankie's owner used to use one on him - to be honest he really isn't that bad though

I don't know too much about them, but they are ONLY used for leading, and defiantly not to be used with side reins.

as you've used one before, and your horse is a big lad, i'd stick with the chiffney...

better to be in control than have an accident!!!!

thanks, when his hooves were round my head yesterday i did question it!!lol!!!

Couldnt sell him tho - hes broken!lol!!

think chiffney is def the way forward then! will order one, unless anyone has one lying around they're not using!!

Fair enough. Good luck with him & don't forget your hat!

i had to use one on poppy for a year, only ever use when leading never tie a horse in it, i only used it on poppy because she is the strongest animal i kno

You can use a chiffney with another bit. So if he needs the side reins, have them on the normal bit and have the chiffney just in case he starts rearing.

I used one to walk my boy out after months of box rest. I had a rope on his headcollar and a rope on the chifney to use just incase and I did need to use it. I think the chifney probably saved his life as without it he was leaping of the ground which I was told could shatter his leg as he had a mending fracture of the Radius.

You can also ask your vet for some acp / sedalin if he gets too naughty
Hat, gloves and body protector, and an enclosed space.!

I would definitely think about using ACP/sedalin as well...it could take the edge off him and then really be better for the both of you...it could help with not having to get in to a struggle with him.
Good luck with however you choose to deal with this tricky situation...

Thanks for all your help guys, I didnt realise I could use chifney with another bit, i think that may be the answer as then i only need to use the chifney if he starts to play up!

Am going to try and long rein him later in the school and see if we have more control then!

Always have hat, body protector on but may progress to full suit of armour soon!!lol!

I'll keep you posted!!if i survive!!
