Hello all,

Looking for some advice please...we have just bought my sons first pony and we are looking to do some unaffiliated things that he can do on the lead rein such as mini sj, lead rein classes, best turned out, mini hunter trials etc. I don’t want to fork out on loads of gear before we even get started in case he doesn’t enjoy the competing but equally want to look the part!

Can anyone advise me on what he should be wearing and also me as the leader! I’m taking it as read that appropriate footwear (he has jodhpur boots and clips) and hat that meets current standards are mandatory.

Thanks so much,

I would look at finding a second hand tweed jacket, some beige jods and a basic shirt, that can be a school one, with a tie that can be found easily at a charity shop, if you get one in a colour that you can pick out to match your outfit that is a good start, you could wear a pair of smart/ casual trousers or skirt with a shirt and waistcoat in the same colour as his tie, easier to find than a suit, gloves should be worn and ideally brown.
It probably won't win a best turned out but should be adequate for everything else unless the pony is a smart show pony type when you will need to have the rider in black or navy and you dressed up to a smarter level to match, not forgetting the velvet browband, none of which is required for a M&M or hunter type pony which I am guessing it will probably be.
The main thing is to have fun, let him enjoy what he does with the pony and that the outfits are safe, you can build on the basics as and when you need to without spending a fortune.

Thank you 😊

Yep tweed jacket unless you have show pony as even a plaited hairy can be classed as Show Hunter Type and that is still tweed. You can pick up lovely 2nd hand tweeds and they hold their money so worth spending the £80 ish on them! Look for Showing Selection, Beau Cheval. A well fitting jacket will make or break an outfit IMO. Wouldnt have though that a girl's jacket is going to be a huge issue at this age as the boys jackets are a bit like hens teeth! Regent Oxblood joddy boots - again, so long as he does not scuff the toes out these will also hold their value, yellow/light beige jods, brown gloves. You - a nice tweed as close to your boy's tweed as possible, a skirt to match his hat colour, tights and shoes that you can run in and can clean up! gloves, hat, blouse, cane in your left hand on the left of the pony along with the leather lead rein attached to the noseband

I'm no help with showing at all but thought I would mention that if you want him to do any sort of hunter trials/xc in most cases a skull cap is required (no fix peak).
Hope you both have fun!

Thanks both, we have skull caps as I thought they were the safest option anyway!
Mcnaughty do you have an opinion on hat velvet colour? We have black jodhpur boots and tack. Pony is chestnut roan...

What be positive has said... School shirt, tie, and there are loads of fab tweed on eBay and fb groups. Buy new for hats and body protector obviously.
