Children riding in the dark...

Not a fan of any one riding on the roads after dark, too many risks not worth taking in my opinion, 2 people I know of one of which a good friend has been hit in daylight in the last week both of which were hi vizd up.

So children, no! My little girl will not be riding out after dark.

Sometimes hacking in the dark is inevitable - but ideally should be avoided. We've ended up hacking back to the box at dusk after hunting and on occasion when the sun set a bit quickly becuase the weather changed. Load and loads of hi viz!

its not safe for anyone to hack on the roads after dark, adult or child

every one hacks around the fields on the farm where we keep horses after dark though but not the road

What are peoples views of children hacking out after dark?

Can you expand on where this hacking is taking place? Roads or private land? If it is private land and it is a clear sky night then I cannot really see the problem.

Never on roads though.

Similar to adults, it depends where & how etc. My 7yr old rides with me when its dark, we have a lane closed to motor vehicles we hack up & down. And we have a tiny housing estate opposite the farm, residents all know us, its full of street lights, so lit up like xmas trees we will nip round it. Off road hacking yes, but with an adult depending on age & ability etc. I wouldn't ride on proper roads in the dark though, let alone allow a child. And, unless there's an adult on a larger horse, even when its just dull, a kid on a small pony with reflectives etc easily could be mistaken for a bike at a distance.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking its not safe then. It was a loaded question as you can guess. My 7yr old had a group lesson last night where the instructor wanted to take her and 4 other children of a similar age out on a hack on the road. I stepped in and said that I didn't think it was safe and that I would pull my little girl from the lesson should she insist they go. A couple of other parents said the same. They ended up having their lesson in the school instead but I don't think the instructor was impressed that I'd questioned her judgement.....

Well done you!
I don't think it's safe either.

I have no option but to ride in the dark atm (except for weekends) we dont have a menage at where i keep my horses and no lights available for me to use the field. I have use of the menage a 5/10 minute ride away from my place. I have loads of hi viz on and flashing lights as do my horses, the road isnt busy (we're in a quiet village) and the residents are used to having horses around. I can get on the verge at points and also onto the footpath if needed and more often than not I have my parents follwing me in the car anyway.

Yulp brave riding intructor , did she mean to take them on a public road ?

O.o

Hacking in the dark is a big no-no for me, regardless of age or experience. But for a group of 7yo kids who arelearning, and haveprobably o nly just got the idea of personal road safety going, let alone thinking about riding and listening for cars and things... Wow.

wow dont think insurance would cover an accident on the road after dark, so instructor must be crazy.

i dont think there is ever a reason for knowingly hacking out after dark, it put all raod users at extra risk, getting caught out is slightly differentbut usually avoidable
