Hi all!

Ive been asked to help with a childrens day at the yard and Im a bit confused what sort of things to do! The children range from about 9 to 14 ish and need something to entertain them for most of the day!

Was thinking mounted games but not sure which ones! Any other ideas????

We do quite a few childrens days at the yard where I work. Things we do are;mucking out, tack cleaning, grooming, plaiting, bandaging, points of the horse, colours, markings etc...

They have an hour group riding lesson/hack and then after lunch we have the gymkhana where we do sack races, apple bobbing, walk trot canter races, fetch me/bring me amongst others.

We obviously divide the children into groups according to age/ability when they arrive but they mix for the gymkhana.

Hope this gives you some ideas? PM me if you need anything else hun.

Write the parts of a horse on sticky labels, children have to stick label to correct part of horse. Makes the kids laugh as pony ends up covered in sticky labels

Divide them into teams award points for different things, ie how clean there tack is, if a pony is left without hay and water team lose a point things like that

I dont know if you have a huge field you could do a mounted or un mounted treasure hunt, older childen walk with a younger mounted one.

Lay a grooming kit out get kids to turn away remove one item they have to tell you what item is removed.

Tell the kids that at the end of the day they have to parade there pony in "fancy dress" parents like this bit. We did this once and one child had forgotten fancy dress so poor pony had sweet wrapers plaited into tail

hope that helps

Thanks!! Its a bit akward cos its a DIY livery yard so all ponies are out at mo! I was thinking something like a best turned out comp, gymkhana games like apple bobbing, whip race, walk trot canter race, sack race etc. and a treasure hunt cos its a big dairy farm with plenty of passages and places to hide things!

Its ages since I have done anything like this (and Im not the biggest fan of children!) I was roped into it and cant remember the words "Yep sure Ill help" coming out of my mouth lol!

Any other ideas would be much appreciated as we need to cater for the younger kids and the older kids!!

You say your not keen on kids so how about ...Sleeping Horses, like sleeping tigers, in the morning then a sponsered silence after lunch and if they are really good they could poo pick the field

Thats wicked.... I'm sure you'll end up having a great day whatever you do with the little darlings

Points Showjumping - Set five jumps up of differing heights, smallest jump scores 1 point, highest jump scores 5 points and 2,3,4 in between. Set jumps up as a course and kids have to jump 5 jumps but can do 1 jump five times, the whole course or any mix of the jumps so suits all abilities. The more competant kids might try to jump the highest scoring jump five times but may knock it down which scores nothing for that attempt whereas smaller kids can jump lower scoring jumps. Allow one jump over smallest fence as warmup, maximum score possible is 25. Award prize to winner. Hope this makes sense!
