Went hat shopping for the first time in 10 years as my old skull cap is def past its best the amount of times its hit the floor! not always with my head in it!

Anyway went with the purpose of getting an HS1 but didn't quite fit exactly bit loose at the back not horrendous but not perfect. So lady in the shop gave me another one to try on which fits perfectly.

My only slight issue is that its a Champion Junior! child`s hat, great as it only cost £57 rather then the £125 for the HS1 but will it be equally as safe as an adults hat? sorry stupid question

yes

I have a very little head (no room for air! LOL) and have always fitted into kids hats and the bonus is that there's no VAT on them. The thought of them not being safe as an adults has never crossed my mind tbh but if it's the same BS standard safety rating then I can't see why it wouldn't be.

I'm another one with a child's hat. The only draw back to it, as far as I can see, is that it features a cartoon image of a pony on the inside. Slightly embarrassing when spotted at competitions.

Yep, my everyday hat is a Champion Junior that was my son's before he gave up, seemed a waste of a perfectly good hat and it fits me. Same standard as adult hats and a large range of sizes with no VAT so a bit of a bargain. Also love the "Thelwell" cartoon inside, makes me smile as I put it on!

Isn't the difference just the VAT, which is not payable on children's helmets ? The size difference between young children and adults head circumference is very little.

That is true, in fact, in the champion hat the only difference between the child's and the adults is the lining, the mould is the same but shops are NOT allowed to just stock child's hats to fit to adults because of the vat.

I did a hat fitting course with Champion last week. They confirmed that there is absolutely NO difference between the adults and childs helmet other than the lining. BETA have campaigned for years to get riding hats classed as safety equipment to stop VAT being charged on adult ones but have notyet been successful.

The other big thing we were shown was the inside of a hat which had been left on a parcel shelf in a car in hot sunlight. The polystyrene protection layer had been shrunk in the heat and was far thinner within the hat shelf than it should have been.

Size 2 in Charles Owen, 6 7/8 in champion, 56 cm, been wearing them for years with thelwell inside :)

With my latest one, the only difference was the box!

I tried both an adult and junior champion skull helmet and the difference I found was the adult helmet was "deeper" whereas I felt the kids one was perched on my head. I went for the kids one anyway but had to replace the helmet after a fall and went all out and bought a HS1.

It's the same mould, did you have different sizes? I can fit in a 1 1/2 and a 2. But the smaller one didn't feel deep enough.

If it was the junior and adult pro plus and not a different style like the ventair then its the same mould so couldn't have been deeper.
Iv watched the hats being made as well as going though the kyte marking process. Very interesting.
