my tb mare has always been a bit of a chilly one, and before you all say it i have tried not to over rug her however...

she is unclipped and out during the day and in overnight, she had a heavy weight 350g with hood turnout on and was shivering!
i have now put on a stable rug under her medium weight turnout with hood- ears still cold and she was shivering again in the rain earlier. when she comes in after about 10 mins she stops shaking, i am getting worried she has something wrong with her and dont want to put anymore rugs on or she will be like a mitchelin man!
 
Take her TPR rates for a couple of days...mine did this in the spring (my delicate TB flower) and she had a bit of a cold/virus.

Not if her temperature etc is normal...and she isn't snotty or coughing....I'd just keep an eye on her.
If her temperature is high or low...I'd be inclined to get the vet out (obviously depending on how high or low).

I've got a 'snuggys hoods' hood for Adrian. It's got attached 'gloves' for his ears & it's fine for turnout. This is its 3rd winter & it's still in one piece.

He's clipped with a thick duvet & a FAL heavyweight silver interactive Goliath Ultimate with the attached neck cover. It's soooo chilly this eve that I caught him in & nearly froze my fingers off putting his hood on as well. I find it makes a huge difference to his warmth...altho he does look as if he's going jousting.

It was quite expensive & as soon as I'd ordered it, I thought, F, what did you do that for???? But now I'm totally in love with it & if A manages to trash it, I'd buy another one straight away.

PS get the version with the zip if you can afford it. Mine's got a zip & I can get it on in minutes, and I think it would be a lot trickier without.
 
i too am having probs with my mare,she's unclipped (daren't clip her yet) she's in a Fal heavy weight and is still moping about the field and quite cold to touch in places and i'm a bit concerned,they gave it chilly down our way tonight so today i put her commander under rug with belly pad on as well and i'll see how she is tomorrow,she comes galloping over to the gate when she sees my car turn up and she wolfs her 2 feeds down everyday plus hay,not sure what to do really as she is loosing weight if anything and she's on conditioning feed.She's up to date with worm,teeth etc. Sorry to hijack the post but once i read this it's made me even more concerned now!
 
There was an interesting report in one of the horse mags the other day. It reported that on still days, when the horse's coat is dry, a horse with a decent winter coat will be comfortable down to -5C. But on a windy, wet night if the horse's coat is soaked, the horse will only be comfortable down to about +10C. This might be worth thinking about. When horsey comes in, is she dry and warm under her rug/s? Are the rugs wet through or even just dampened on the inside? If my horse was shivering and miserable under thick, dry rugs, I'd certainly do some more investigations and my first thought would be not well. I'd keep her in for a few days to see if that perked her up but if she doesn't improve, I'd have the vet out.
 
I forgot to say that for my delicate flower TB...I bought a Weatherbeeta underrug with neck...it's 200g weight...but I think you can get them in different weights...it stays put nicely and she's almost too warm in it...with a normal HW full neck turnout over it, of course.
Tonight, she's out in the field...with a WB fleece under her normal full neck number...if that helps...and it's supposed to be -2 ish here...although dry.
TB's feel the cold more because all their veins are closer to teh surface, and they have thin skins and not much winter coat...anyone would think they were originally from hot, dry, Arabian countries....

Just a quick note - I bought a Snuggy Hood with zip, in just ONE night the zip broke and I found it in a heap in the field! Am just about to send it back to SH to get fixed but they wont say if they'll charge me or not - but the zip was definately faulty - the zip runner bit is absolutely fine, its purely the actual zippy bit that's not there. Just be aware sometimes they do brake...

I bought these for my two last week - and boy are they warm! may technically be 200gm2 but horses both agree they feel much warmer than that.
