Does anyone have any experience of the breed, I've fallen in love with them!

I'm looking for a second dog as my older whippet died last year and my younger (age 5) whippet would love a playmate. I love whippets as a breed but have found from bitter experience that two whippets together have a depressing inclination to bugger off hunting for hours on end at the slightest opportunity and I just can't cope with the stress of it.However, I like my dogs to be with me as much as possible whilst I'm working or with my horses.

So as I teach riding freelance, I want a dog that can come round with me and my whippet while I work but that won't vanish into the distance as soon as my back is turned.

Dog would also have to be excellent with children as I have a toddler and whilst I work hard to teach her to be gentle and respect the dog, she is very fond of my whippet and loves to play with/hug/cuddle her. A dog that couldn't tollerate a bit of toddler attention wouldn't be suitable.

I would prefer a dog who was fairly clean and quiet in the house.

would a crested fit the bill? Everything I've read seems to say that they are good with children, easy to train, don't moult etc but does anyone have any experience with them. Any known problems with the breed, common areas where owners struggle etc. Thanks! (Oh, I would be looking at the hairless rather than the powerderpuff BTW)

Have to say I am not a fan of the hairless variety, sorry. A friend had a powder puff who was a great little dog, used to boss their GSD about, so I imagine a hairless would certainly have similar breed characteristics. The only thing I would say from ones I have seen at shows etc is that they do seem to feel the cold a lot (obviously I suppose as they have no coat) so not sure how one would cope with being outside with you whilst you are working etc.

I too own two whippies and if I had my own way I would of had a Chinese crested years ago. I did hear that they are prone to a few skin conditions and possibly sun burn but with proper management it shouldnt cause problems. As for the cold...... Im sure being an experience whippy owner the dogs coat wardrobe is bigger than yours just like mine....

My neighbour has two of the powderpuff type ones, she is elderly but seems to have managed to train them very easily and hers are well behaved pleasant little dogs

They can be a bit yappy but surprisingly infrequently so which is a relief!

they cope well with the cold and rain and seem robust and tough but as they are the ones with full coats I guess its easier than with the hairless ones

Eh, I'm not a huge fan. Love the way they look, but temperament wise I'm unimpressed. I find them really nervous and or sharp. It could just be the owners who often feel the need to coddle them so they become spoiled. The powderpuffs require LOTS of grooming and it's not generally the easiest of coats to look after.

We groomed one the other day that when it's out fit of a tee shirt and two jumpers came off you could see the sun tan lines -but the skin was BLACK where the sun had burned it and much much lighter flesh where a tee shirt had been worn. Worst case of golfers tan I've ever seen!

Thank you everyone, some food for thought here. I had heard they had a very annoying bark so I will look into this.

I think the next step is to call a couple of breeders and ask them what they think as well.

And yes, my whippet's wardrobe is nearly as big as my daughters LOL!!!

Hiya.. i have a hairless Chinese Crested.. hes a fab wee dog.. i also have 4 dobermanns.. I take my CC down to the stables with me and the dobermanns almost every day.. Yes my cc feels the cold when hes not running around so i just pop a jacket on him.. Hes as hard as nails and loves running around with the big dogs.. HOWEVER... hes not he norm for the breed.. some of the breed can be quite shy and timid.. i put it down to the blood lines they come from and also the way they are treated.. lots of folks who own them treat them like wee dogs so they tend to become pathetic.. well thats my view about it.. i show my cc and hes really friendly and out going.. he runs up to anyone who looks like they just might pat him and hes super friendly. Hes great in the house.. very cat like tho and likes running about the top of the sofa lol. hes hard on the big dogs and does try to bully them.. not that he manages that very often.. i love owning a cc.. they are indeed a very loving happy breed..

Hi we have had hairless and puff we keep them with Italian greyhounds and black labs, some can be nervy but ours have all done full days at stables with all the other dogs.

One of the hairless ones even used to love going shooting with my dad he was mortified in case anyone saw him, the dog used to get in to all the scrub and undergrowth he did wear a coat.

I think if you treat the same as any other dog it helps one of our puffs is very aloof with strangers and is nervy around dogs he doesnt know then when he is used to them just ignores them.
Some are more playful but be aware you could end up with a tempremental one even so they all have very big personalities and I am sure you will fall in love.

Just remember keep skin clean and moisturiser on and woolies on when its cold otherwise treat as any other dog and you will be fine, I find they are similar to the Italian greyhounds that if you ignore any nervousness and dont pamper them too much it makes them much better dogs.

Haha at your dad *trinity fox*, my OH is horrified and says that he will NEVER NEVER be seen out walking her if I get one.

I give it a week though knowing him, he is way softer than I am with the dogs!

Funny, my hubby said that about my poodle. However, when we go for walks, he always takes the poodle and I take the Border Terrorist. Poodle is SUCH a daddy's boy its unreal!

I used to have one sadly he passed away 18 mths ago..He always wore coats as would get cold quickly. Also had to be careful with the sun and wool against their sensitive skins.Moistourise him regulary, using a cream without lanalin(sp)
They can be nervy and snappy, and also with the hairless ones you have to watch out for bad teeth.
My boy was just so special
