Hi all, just wanted some reasurance.........
My horse was kicked out in the field back in july. I treated it just like any other minor injury as the cut was about 2cm and she wasnt lame at the time. Next day she was hopping lame, and her leg was very swollen just below the knee down. vet came out and was a little concerned, referred her straight away, as he didn't have all the equipment at the time.
Turns out her cannon bone was chipped. I was told to keep her on box rest and light turnout for a few months, with regular check-ups and antiobiotics etc.
I got the all clear in November to get her back into gradual work. All had been going so well untill 3 weeks ago she went lame, got the vet out who said the x-ray shows a possible cist in the wound area. They said to give her a week or so to see how she goes as the x-ray is very simular to prev one (she could have slipped or knocked her leg hard, so they said!) Anyway a week later she was sound! So again, i bring her back into work sticking to walk! Tonight she comes in from field lame again!!!! Their out monday to nerve block her leg, hoping to get the the bottom of this!
Shes only a 5 yo, we was both doing so well. Just fealing really down about it all. would be nice to hear from you guys about ur progress/experiences and your thoughts about this?

You have my sympathies my horse had splint just below his knee in june /july then just as it improved he was kicked in the same spot. These youngsters go from one thing to another my horse has been very unlucky (2 years off bad luck)hang on in there .

Where is the chip? One of my horses has a fracture on his cannon bone too. Was lame initially, settled back down to being about 95% a few months later. He was this sound for about a year, and then bouncing around in the field, became lame again. He's still lame 2 years on.

The chip is on her right forelimb, about 4cm above the fetlock. Had the vet out today and they did a nurve block in the area where the wound initially was, but she was still lame so shes got to go back to surgery to have a full lame examination. But how tyipical, i bought her in Sat night and she was hopping lame, so i left her in all sunday - Vet was out today and she was literally sound, so box rest could also be an option, but im waiting at call back to tell me whats what. Its just so frustrating not knowing. And even worse for them to say that they can't see that the lameness is coming from the same injury. Tyipical of her too the fact shes always messing around in field full of energy, galloping about and isn't great to be boxed rest neither.

No my guy can't do box rest. I did put him on it, but it was a waste of time, so my vet agreed with me just to turn him out.

I'm not sure if anything I've told you will be any help to you at all, but when the weather warms up, and my vet does his stuff, I'll post on here to give an update. Could be good news, could be bad. Only time will tell, but yes I am as frustrated as you.

Keep in touch. I'd like to know how you get on.
