Have phoned the vet for any idea's as to why 4 horses at our yard have choked in last 2 weeks , one of them twice, all have regular dentist and are out 24 hours at the mo , any thought's welcome, vet had no idea .
Are they drinking enough - could there be a taint in the water, or are troughs not filling properly that might cause it? Have they recently started being fed hay/feed or extras of this? Is it properly wetted or soaked?
what are they fed? When has each occurance happened? after having hard feed or another time?
Has anything changed at all?
Mine was on chaff and sugar beet and choked twice. - very sloppy feed but she bolted it so I got a wider bucket and spread her feed in it so she couldn't eat as much in one mouthful.
Please can I ask what symptoms the horses displayed for you to recognise choke?
Following eating happy hoof (Well dampened and his regular feed), my horse made 'wheezing' noises then went galloping round the field and rolled several times. I was worried he had colic. Vet came the first time it happened, but of course he seemed fine when vet came out. Then he did it again a week later. Has anyone experienced this?
My horse had choke once when he ate grass nuts that I had given unsoaked before without problems. He was hungry and gulped them down and I knew straight away what was wrong. He gave a pathetic little neigh and stood in the corner of the stable looking miserable. I tried to massage his throat and phoned the vet. The horse raised his head about the same time as the vet arrived. Obviously the blockage had cleared by itself, which was why the vet wasn't in too much of a hurry. She said that 50% clear themselves and the other 50% she is up all night with, but you never know which when the phone goes!
Definitely have a look at the water supply and what is being fed. Maybe it is a new batch of feed?
