A livery where my loan boy is kept (house of his owners) has been told whilst daughter of family is home she will feed all horses (so mine, her pony and said livery) morning and evening as it's simpler to feed all at once.

Text livery to say she was away weds night and thurs morn but rest of 2 weeks all fine, so myself and livery arranged to feed those two times.

Turns out she stayed away for another day, so horses first feed since thurs morn was this afternoon when my friends had gone up to ride mine a livery (with permission).

Livery horse finds small pile of hay in stable and scoffs it, promptly choking.

Friend who is riding is distraught, calls owners, vet out and however many quid later horse is likely to be right as rain but still... I think they should hand vets bill to the YOs who as the parents of this girl should take responsibility (she's 16 and being allowed to play ponies with not only her own but other peoples horses!)

Ive already said between myself and livery we will ALWAYS do our two and never trust this girl again, it just annoying that we've tried and tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but now this has happened..I don't know if that makes it partly our fault?!? Grrr sorry for rant!

I found what you wrote a little difficult to understand.

But I am presuming the horse missed hard feed and is kept out in the field?

In this case I would be pretty annoyed that the feeds got missed but I think it is unlikely to have caused the choke.

However if the horse was out in a field with no grass at all and the feed missed was hay in the field. Then bolting the hay down because he was hungry could have caused the choke. It would be tricky to prove x

Choke, always massage left throat very firmly, with fist either up or down NEVER both, this will in most cases dislodge the lump of food. My mare was a regular choker She had been starved in the latter months of pregnancy, and badly abused. I have found any animal that has been starved understandably develops food issues.

Note have someone call vet, you can always calll back to cancel. Has saved me a small fortune.
