Choke Chains OPINIONS

Unsuitable OH's, but which of the following would you choose (and you must choose one!)?

When we first got Honey (as a 3 year old) she didn't know how to heel and pulled so was quite strong. We got her a choke lead and mum (and us) started teaching her how to come to heel and she responded with it so well. We can now take her on a walk with out a lead- but do take one just incase- and she is very well behaved.
I don't see a problem at all with using them just as long as they are used properley.

[/ QUOTE ]See this is what I think TBH 99% of the time I doubt it would come into use... it'd be the odd occasion that it would be used.. and as I said above I'm thinking more about the noise it makes... aso that I can then go back to half check.

Thats ok, glad to be of some help. I forgot to add that we don't use a choke chain anymore just a normal lead when we do take it with us

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah maybe.. tried him in one the other night - no need to 'choke/jerk/pull' it - however was consideringtring in a crowded situation, as this is when he pulls.
 
halti fantastic for my lab but took two terrible walks to get her comfy with it, she just went round rubbing her nose on the ground til bleeding at first.
now perfect walking to heal with and without halti
her last owners used choke/check chain but useless on thicker necked dogs, they just pull and pull until cant breath

When I used to take my GSD to training classes we always used choke chains - the sort the police use(d), with big long links. You have to know how to fit and use one correctly, but with a big powerful dog they can change a walk from an exercise in arm pulling into a pleasant experience for both parties. We walk Morgan on a Halti, and it is useless for lead training - but then she is an exceptionally thick dog that just refuses to learn anything. Yes, they do exist, although I would never have believed it until I had her - I would always blame the owner. Finn is going to be a big powerful dog, so lead training is going to be a priority. If you do go for a choke, don't use a thin one. Half chokes are not bad, but for basic training you might find a conventional one better to start.
 
Got in all sorts of trouble when we had this discussion before as I am really anti choke chains. I was recommended a 'gentle leader' by a dog behaviourist for Alf the pitbull (disguised as a weedy lurcher) It seems kinder on his face than a halti and it makes him behave so much better.

That's why I don't like harnesses, dogs lean on them and the amount I've seen being used incorrectly and dogs practically walking/dancing on hind legs.

As for the headcollar/halti type things. Again being used incorrectly, dogs still pulling but end up with their head tilting to one side due to the action of them.

As for dogs that continue to pull on check chains when they can't breath...they come across as being a bit dim, or the owner isn't using it right.

[/ QUOTE ]Ditto - Finn learns quickly so I would think that he'd learn if he didn't pull it would be more comfortable... but then he's a dog - they may not think like that!! LOL!!
 
Halti or canni-collar all the way. i have a 2yo rottie bitch and she walks lovely in a canni-collar - i prefer these to haltis as they do not interfere with the dogs eyes.

At least they don't interfer with the eyes and also don't look so much like a muzzle!!

they actually look like quite a good option. No head to side movement etc, as long as the dog hasn't got an overly sensitive nose though

TBH the fact that he is a good boy 99.9% of the time on a normal walk... and 90% of the time in a crowd situation - we'll have to see what he thinks of it - when and if it comes into use.
 
thats whats good about the canni - as long as pup walks nicely, then there is no pressure applied, only when she spots something that she want to tow me to does it come into effect, and she respects it.

*note, pup is actually pretty well trained with her KKawards right up to gold level, she just gets a bit excited at the sight of a rotting rabbit corpse

OH seems to think that the longer link gives a 'flat' pressure so has said he'd prefer a smaller link which will give a 'round' pressure.... Finn doesn't have long hair so the catching obv isn't an issue so I guess I'll see how it goes?!?
