The larger the link the kinder the chain...

[/ QUOTE ]Hmm why is that? sorry might be being dense!

Is it cos it can't 'slip' as quickly as a small link therefore 'choking' quicker?

BEWARE of halti's, never sue one on puppys, then can seriously hurt them, muscle damage and growth problems, please be aware, a chcok chain is far better, we breed dogs and the choke chain goes into action when needed with proper training, the dog is fine but we (alot of breeders) are AGAINST haltis and so dangerous!

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks Tophorse, TBH I wasn't keep on the Halti idea as being lead from the head at such a young age was not my ideal resolution.... As you say - health issue can ensue....

I think the canny was quite a good idea... but am TBH leanng more to the choke chain more as like I've been saying it is only 10% of the time at the moment in a crowd that he would need it to come into effect - and should quickly learn!!!

There is NO WAY I will be tugging on the collar... perhaps a short 'snatch' and release if required.. however I feel the restriction around his neck may discourage the pulling anyways!! He's a clever dude!!

no for the halti!
grin.gif
anyway the head and neck area is a very sensitive area for the dog as in dog behaviour you as a human are showing dominance and control if you touch that area so if a dog is scared and tugging iwth lead and neck it will either bolt or go down and become very stubborn to move so it sbest to gain the dogs trust e.g taking its favourite snack what ever that may be and gaining trust so in big crowds talk to it like a horse and small tugs like kicking on horse give and take idea and for every mose forward praise and reward with snack. should work but remember that neck and head area, if you have control etc over a dog then you can touch it there and if you want it to go away from YOUR area push away by pushing on neck. hope that has helped

[/ QUOTE ]Haha - I was steering towards no anyways - don't want my doggy looking like he has to be muzzled - NOR do I want to interfere with his face TBH!!!

How could you when he is this gorgeous...

[/ QUOTE ]Yup the snack suggestion makes sense.... as HBII said above... distract him!!

Thanks for the advice... we are almost there just have little lapses at times... which is why I feel that a cc may help!!

Pressure and release... and all that!!

I have no problem with choke chains providing they are fitted correctly.
cool.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Yes agreed...

I purchased a LARGE collar for Finn the other day and it was too small!!!
blush.gif

What would you advise be correctly fitting?

I have just spoken to a lady at a pet shop, she suggested as long as it fits over the head comfortably that should be OK - However in Finns case I didn't feel that it did fit correctly, when it was not attached to a lead it didn't lay loose.. it kind of stayed in the same position as it would when on the lead?!
confused.gif

I would say that it needs to lie loose - until a contact is picked up.. e.g lie low on the neck towards shoulders... and when contact picked up around 2-3inches slack taken up to rest lightly around throat?!

Am I wrong?

I don't use one on my dogs at present as they never go anywhere on a lead, however years ago I had a Labrador and he was a bugger to take out on the lead so he always wore a choke chain. I liked it to lie loose around his neck and when contact was taken up on the lead the amount of chain from the ring on collar to the lead-clip was about 4 inches.

[ QUOTE ]
I have to say, I can't bear the halti's and would never use one.

[/ QUOTE ]I have to say I was never keen on the idea - however the Canny Halti looked like a reasonable comprimise but still wasn't sure...

I just saw a dog whilst I was driving home to let my boys out that had a halti on and he looked so depressed, head held low
frown.gif
.. that may have just been that individual.

I agree that it works for some people and it doesn't change the 'way' their dog is.. however some just don't like it - I don't think Finn would at all - given the chance he tried to scratch his collar, let alone something on his face!!!

My dogs all wear their collars loose though. I don't like to see collars on tightly and I have a dreadful habit of loosening then on other peoples dogs when they look like they are in jeopardy of strangling them
blush.gif
. I do tell the owners though

Perhaps it is just the way some people lead their dogs in halti's but almost every time I see one in a halti, the poor blooming dog is having to walk with it's head constantly tilted towards the owner.....that can't be good for a young dog! As I say it is probably just people who don't use it properly

A choke chain should only tighten briefly round the dog's neck when it is checked by the handler, otherwise it hangs loose when walking. The larger links are kinder to the dog's neck as it is a wider surface - the wider the surface, the less it cuts in. Also, the large links loosen very quickly.

One of JRT's and my collie will pull until they sound like they're gonna pass out in an ordinary collar. My fault really..never taught them properly as I rarely ever walk them. I now use a harness for both and neither pull at all in them. So that would be my preference..don't really like the ideas of choke chains or actually anything round their necks..I'm naughty, none of mine wear collars.

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks Sooty - I want the chain to be slack when not is use... so it fits correctly.

OH is getting a chain from 'the gun shop' LMAO - why he couldn't go to the pet shop I'll never know!!

Naughty!! Isn't that illegal Sojeph!!!
tongue.gif

Yes it is illegal, LOL!

Over here if your dog does not have a collar and tags on; if it gets picked up by wardens then it will be put to sleep; if they have tags on, then they contact you and dog waits in the pound for you to collect them. Definitely NOT worth the risk in my opinion.

[/ QUOTE ]Eeek defo not worth the risk... do they check if he/she is chipped?

Yes they do but it has been known for them to forget to check for the chip though!
shocked.gif

Mine are chipped but it makes no difference to me - mine all wear their collars and tags. I just couldn't take the risk of them being killed because someone may have "forgotten" to check for chip I'm afraid.
frown.gif
Very much doubt that they wouldn't check chips in England though.....having said that one of my dog's chips moved and when the vet was looking for it, he would certainly have given up on it had I not insisted that she had one!
shocked.gif
He eventually found it down one of her shoulders LOL!!

I have 2 st bernards and when we got them they had been mistreated and not taought manners/socialised etc. Within 2 weeks of having them and taking them for walks with their chockers (which they came with!!) I had to have 2 weeks of work as they had pulled every muscle in my left arm.
I bought a halti each for them and we have never looked back. They took a while to get used to them but now they push their heads into them when they are getting ready to go out.
I swear on haltis as does my mum with her boxers.
By the way my girls weigh 73kgs and 82kgs!!!

[/ QUOTE ]LOL - I defo make mine wear collars when we are out - silly thing is that they don't have them on when in the house - and when the front door is open they will often wander out great people coming into the drive - I guess this s when they should have them on!!

I'm not 100% agains the halti but I think my my situation with a 23 week old pup I don't like the idea of them incase I do any damage, he then walks with head bent to me etc....

I will defo try the choke as this is not something he has worn before.. so will see!!!

My friend who has a Weimaraner (sp?) swears by hers and insists that if he didn't wear it she wouldn't be able to walk him!!!
crazy.gif
Yet the husband can walk him no probs in a choke?!?

Gentle Leader Harness/Halti are just as effective. Choke chains are outmoded. If I can walk a boisterous 80lb Pit Bull in a halti, then there's no reason for anyone using a choke chain, which I've seen used incorrectly/abused way too many times.

if used correctly i think they are fine, but when used incorrectly they can be very dangerous. personally if i had a dog i'd get one of them little halter things

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks for your info... however I'm not going to abuse/incorrectly use the choke.. I just don't want the puppy to have anything around his face - he shouldn't need it!! Equally he shouldn't need a choke - but at least I can go back from there to a hlf check - creatign the same audial sound to restrict!!

As for 80lbs... the puppy in question at 23weeks weighs 85lbs (39kgs/6.1 stone) so I want to nip it in the bud bow before I get dragged wherever he chooses.. and he is not naughty - just interested/excited as puppies are!!!

It does depend on the dog and the trainer on occassions though as well. Some dogs just don't lke chains full stop. My dog just hates collars, won't wear one.

You could also try the 'working' kind of dog lead you use of gundogs, they're just as effective

[/ QUOTE ]As in the one over the nose? or the body harness?

I will certainly not be doing anything with the choke to hurt/scare my puppy... I can assure EVERYONE of that!!

Anything can be dangerous in the wrong hands!!
