My cob mare has this a few times and its always scary i usually walk her around till it clears, i have stopped putting things in her feed like carrots and apples as this always seemed to be what set her off. She doesnt panic but it sounds like someone is killing a pig lots of squeling noises.

My TBx mare used to get it all the time - at one point she was getting it daily
frown.gif
crazy.gif
Her teeth get done every 6 months, her hay is soaked (although she is on haylage now) and her feeds are soaked well - I put her nuts/mix into soak in the morning and she is fed in the evening. Also, I've found giving her hay before her hard feed means she doesn't bolt her food so much. Touch wood she hasn't had it for three years now

Have to walk my lad round or he would roll on concrete...however in his stable lastnight he just kept going on knees trying and getting up again...mine was stupid though, tried eating more when it hadnt completely cleared
confused.gif
,tied him up outside for an hour to let things settle, put him back in then fine
grin.gif
...ohhhhhhhh those gurgling noises,i thought he was drowning in his own saliva and to see all that phlegm
shocked.gif
,i always thought they couldnt breathe when they choked...however yard owners vet had told her(as her tb gelding gets it quite a bit...tbs must be pigs, lol)they can as both tubes are seperate...was thankful for this news but still stressful 1st,2nd,3rd etc time you see it that bad
frown.gif
,had my lad from being a baby and i was fighting the tears back as i couldnt help him

My old Standardbred did it regularly - up to once a month. He was greedy and gobbled his food if he was hungery. Pink also does it occasionally, again due to food gobbling.

I jus turned them back out in the field and left them too it. Brodie would go down and lie quietly then get up, pace and lie down again. Pink will roll a couple of times then stand with her head down, neck convulsion occasionally.

They often did it one day after the other - the first bout left their oesphagus swollen so more prone the next morning.

Best way to stop it I found was to hand feed the first couple of mouthfuls - once the intial excitment of food was over they wuld eat at a sensible speed.

one of my youngsters had it badly 3 weeks running, badly enough to need the vet every time. she's living out and doesn't get it with hay or haylage, only hard feeds. she now gets these absolutely swimming in water, more like soup, and she's fine with it like that.

funny you say that...when my lad was living out he never got it,even when big round bales were put out...but apparently vet says 90% of our horses will get it overnight at some point and we would never know...crazy eh
confused.gif

Strange, one of mine did this tonight, took his muzzle off and shoved a bit of hay down for him, he promptly stuffed a big mouthful in, forgot to chew and tried to swallow, cue lots of coughing, choking and back out came the unchewed hay, tsk, tsk, greedy piglet.
