Choosing a rescue over a puppy.....

[ QUOTE ]
I don't like it when a rescue sounds as if it is convinced that every dog must be savable. I have read on foreign rescue sites about dogs for whom they have a list of requirements on their new potential owner/home, that really makes me wonder if it is in the dogs best interest to wait for that one special person to ever turn up.

I am glad Gazehound, (formerly known as Splotchy and before that _Acolyte_, (BobblyHat?), Bobblestock, Acolyte_, Vashti, Acolyte, PreNovice Eventer and IntroEventer) that it has worked out so well for you with your rescues and maybe I shouldn't mention that the owner of the puppy I sold last year, after a few weeks phoned and during our conversation said "I didn't knew it could be this easy with a puppy, he is so much easier than my rescue that I got x years ago!"

I am sure there is sensible dogs (or would be sensible dogs in the right home) in rescues, that can make their new owner very happy but as with all dog buying, it matters who you get it from. Sensible rescues does their best to make sure you don't leave them with an unsuitable dog. And the same should a sensible breeder...

Are you trying to suggest that I change my user name quite often by the way?

You have a brilliant memory, I usually cant remember all of them but you have listed them all

Not 100% sure what this is referring to. But I have to be honest, and say that in all good conscions I coulnd't pay a couple of hundred quid for a puppy, knowing there was a dog waiting for a home in a rescue kennel.

Just breaks my heart thinking about it. And as cute as a puppy is - actually give me an adult dog any day of the week. Preferably a large, hairy German Shepard, LOL.

Oh no I don't have a brilliant memory but I'm a good stalker, I keep notes, in case you would change back and put _ in front of/behind/both in front of and behind one of your old user names as you did with Acolyte...

I don't do it with others but I try to make sure I don't lose track of you.

Last year when I was seriously looking for another Springer, I got onto their rescue website.

I downloaded their form, filled in all the extensive questions and gave loads of information about my experience, homelife etc etc........

They have never replied

Since then, l have heard of lots of springers looking for new homes via word of mouth but due to change in circumstances I won't be ready to take on another young dog until the New Year now anyway.

To me it seems ridiculous, springers must be one of the most prolific dogs in rescue centres and the one of the most difficult to rehome - they really do have "special requirements"

yet mention that you actually work them - ie use them for what they are bred for and it would appear that you are instantly crossed off the list!!

I have always rehomed via staffie rescue. Staffie rescue were first and foremost interested in my background with staffies and what sort of life I led, then the checks came into play. They have been spot on with the dogs and didn't hide the quirks (so first one, absolutely not with children as they had abused/burnt her - she was terrified of children between 4 and 10). If you are in the South East, then most definately go and look at Rescue Remedies. They put so much effort into understanding their dogs, putting information out and keeping the pound PTS dogs. They have had some long timers in there but dont give up and have a good sucess rate. Anyone in 2 minds about homing a rescue dog should read their daily diary or look at the individual threads they run for EACH dog. I transported 2 staffie boys from yorkshire on the PTS list and they managed to rehome them both in under 3 weeks....I agree some rescues are overly stringent but wish people would stop and think long and hard about trying to rehome first - maybe if people knew just how the rescues are struggling with the huge intake of dogs and how many do not make it through the pounds, then they would think again...
