Hi all,

I am currently trying to decide which yard to move my horse to. The first yard has good stabling, good turnout (tho no shelter) and good facilities, however it is a quite a busy yard and I prefer a smaller set-up.
The second yard has really nice turnout, good stabling, very small and private set-up plus an outdoor school. The only problem is I need lighting for those autumn and winter evenings and the lady who owns the place is reluctant to get any as she rides during the daytime.

My question is - is it possible to do DIY lighting for a 20m x 40m outdoor school with low or medium-level halogen lights (ie sat on the ground or on the railing of the school). Floodlighting is not an option due to planning permission and expense.

Any advice would be most welcomed! Thank you :-)

Are you able to ride in the mornings? It is always light enough to ride by 7.30am, usually earlier.

but yes, you could get some security lights and mount them to raised poles if Y/O is happy for you to do it at your own cost. The lamps themselves are usually less than a tenner each...

You could get some solar lights and place them on the fence pointing to the floor so you wouldn't get the bright light in your eyes.

If you have access to electric you could use a couple of site lights. we got some from screwfix, about £15/20 for a stand with 2 lights on & they lit a decent size up to ride under xx

Thank you for your responses. I don't have time to ride in the mornings, but I like the idea of getting solar lights or site lights as long as they'd be safe if it was rainy. Thanks again :-)

Solar lighting is a great idea. Where I used to work we never had lights on one of the outdoor schools. If I had to use that one in the evening for whatever reason I would park my car right up at the fence with the head lights on. Worked a treat!

You can get LED floodlights which run off a 12v battery via an inverter. They could be fixed onto the top of the fencing posts but you would need more units of a lower wattage output to spread the glow. The inverter is about £40, and each light approx £25. Angled correctly the spread of light would cover all the arena to see where your horse is stepping.

We run 4 x 500w on 12ft poles and its effective enough to have lessons and for our trainer to criticise our position LOL!

I was at a yard where there was a school but no lighting. To get round this I of site lights & extension leads. I'd set these up on two corners of the arena before we rode & then would take them down again afterwards. They lit the school enough for schooling but not enoiugh for jumping. If you do this they are temporary & do not require planning permission.
