i personally put the best saddle I can on my youngsters to start them.. I have started one in a £1200 Barry Swain, your saddles are insured and can be replaced but your horse if started incorrectly in a saddle which is not a perfect fit can destroy your horse for life. !0 years dowm the line I am still using that £1200 saddle on teh same horse. If has been adjusted and altered as he has changed shape and has had a new tree in it at a cost of £175.
Obviously if you cannot afford that then go with a Saddle COmpany saddle. Can be bought off ebay for about £270 second hand and can be adjusted as many times as is needed for your ponies chnging shape. I would expect the pony to need a 16.4 tops - but make sure you get one with adult panels otherwise it will be far too small for you.
But don;t forget if you back a horse correctly he should not ever turn itself inside out with the saddle. I have backed several and have never had one saddle destroyed.
