can horses really choke on "chopped" carrots rather than ones cut length ways?

iv just bought a decahedron thing and filled it with choppped carrots and now read onlline they can choke... and actually iv heard this before

i think it sounds daft, any comments?

I've always been told that you should chop them lengthways to stop the horse choking. Plenty of people on my yard don't chop them and don't seem to kill their horses but I'm too paranoid to take the risk. Only takes a sec to do

There is a possibility, but I don't think that's high a risk, but too high a risk for me to take.

I was always taught (but that doesn't mean it's right!!) that chopping them into rounds was the worst - if they're not chewed there is a risk of them wedging and blocking the throat (imagine a plug in a plughole). Not helped by the fact horses can't vomit or 'heave' to move them, only cough.

Cutting them legthways was best - makes them go further and no risk of choking. Leaving them whole was ok (but not advised) as there was more chance of the horse chewing them properly or them breaking into lengths.

I've had one horse choke when it's (dim) owner fed it slices of carrot....it did recover though.
I'd slice them if I were you: horses seem to be constantly looking for novel ways to die.

I put sliced carrots in the decahedron with pony nuts as it filters the pony nuts and so takes her longer to get them out! The carrots come out too... as long as they arnt too long!

Now that is very true!

And if they cant find a way to die - or get close to it then at the very least they rustle up something that needs a vet call out, or daily soaking/dressing/injecting/poulticing/hosing etc etc.

I was always told the same. Chopping them into small discs can make fast eaters not notice them enough to remember to chew :|

Personally i feed them whole and mine is sensible enough to remember to chew things anyway

There is a girl on our yard that INSISTS on cutting them round ways (even though we have told her numerous times this is the worst way to do it!)...she sayd it's because he youngerster finds it difficult to chew them....but I've seen him eat a whole carrot before no problem!!

We always feed our carrots whole depending on the size of them....or slices longways if they really are too big!

We've had a horse get a piece of carrot stuck some years ago and it wasn't a nice experience. We'd bought one of those big string bags of carrots and the little bits at the bottom had just been chucked into the feeds - big mistake! We now slice all carrots or feed them whole and the little bits are sliced or chucked if they are too small/round. xxx

Personally, I'd not want to take the risk; I always slice length ways no matter how small the carrot!

Oh nooooo...I've always chopped them (never had any problems and have never heard of any) but some of your stories about choking scare the life out of me

Never chopping them again

! Sliced or whole from now on

Even if old boy hasn't been very inventive at finding new ways to die

not taking any chances

Sorry but i would not chop anything,in the wild if a horse finds a carrott would there be anyone the chopping them ?
Noone at our yard chops and we have never had a case of choking on a carrot, and i have been there for years and there are a lot of horses there !! I put whole ones in their feed

Personally I either give them whole or cut them lengthways cos years ago my friend's pony got a peice stuck in his throat and it was awful watching him struggle to dislodge it.
