As some of you'll know, i was lucky enough to be picked to take part in one of these 6 demos going on around the country.. this one at The Grange.

I've never been to any of these leacture/demo sort of things before, so wasn't sure what to expect.. we had to arrive a few hrs earlier, in order for Chris to have a quick watch, and deciede what he was going to do with us..

There were 4 people, two with 6yr olds, and two with 5yr olds (Squeak being one of them).. first he did a bit of ground work with one of his Adv. horses, then watched a girl ride her horse, then he did some ground work with that, then he got on it.. he did the same with the next persons horse, before getting back onto his Adv. horse... i only got to see a bit of this, as i had to go out and get Squeak ready, and get my hat wired up for a mic.

Was a little nervous before i went in, thinking more about the mic. in my hat, as i hate the sound of my own voice

Saw Lec just before i went in

First off i worked around the bottom end of the school (the audience end) with the other girl on her horse in there too.. Squeak had a few 'moments' but nothing as bad as i thought, i really think he's starting to grow up a bit...
Being in the middle of the arena, with the sound system pointing to the outside i found it quite hard to hear everything he said, so i can't tell you too much about that (Lec, you probably heard more than me?????)
But i think he was mostly getting at for me, was to keep a hold of the outside rein more, and that i'm getting far too much kneck bend!!!

He also did some ground work with Squeak, which really made me laugh.. he was tapping the other horses on the tummy to make them move away from him, some of them a little slow.. but Squeak really made me laugh, first time he really had to start walloping him (not hard, but my whip makes a loud noise) as Squeak was just stood there saying "why are you hitting me?? and what are all those people looking at??" hahaha.. he soon got the hang of all, so then he got on him and did a little trot/canter work.... (Chris Bartle has ridden my horse

It was really interesting to watch, as i've Never seen anyone else ride Squeak!!
For various reasons, other 'top' riders have sat on my horses, or i've been riding theirs, and in all honesty, i've never felt the difference they've made, i think they just get on a horse, and make it go well for that moment, but they don't change the way it goes for the future... in the 10 or so mins that Chris sat on Squeak, i can honestly say, he made weeks/months of a difference, after those 10 mins, i got back on, and could straight away notice the difference!!

I've come away with new ideas about ground work, which will be put into practice with Socks too, and more of an idea about where i should be heading with Squeak..

All in all it was a great night.. i didn't get home till 1:00 in the morning tho

Lec.. if i've missed out any other bit of advice he gave me??

It was interesting gave me ideas about working the back end more. He also mentioned with squeak as he is sometimes wayward/argumentative to get the hind end moving before trying to do anything with his head as he will then have something else to think about. I also thought it was interesting watching you jump as he encouraged a faster pace and I think it took you a couple of times to get it right or to have a bit of faith in that. I have put some videos up for you.
I felt for my horse the transition work will help him with body language and also the working the hindquarters much more which I think will lift my horse off his forehand.
Its amazing you thought there was such a transformation because watching he did not appear to be doing all that much apart from installing some discipline and getting him working his whole body. I guess that is the sign of a great rider compared to just a good one.

We really didn't do that much jumping, not really any excercises anyway.. if was more about flat work, and then getting to the jump!

Re. the speed in which Squeaky gets to the jump.. i know it's the worse thing ever for a rider to blaim their horse, but that really is a Squeaky thing, as i've never had anything else that does it.. it's hard to get him out of it, but it's also very easy to see a stride from (he kinda slows his canter up, untill it feels like he could canter on the spot, untill you find the right spot)... I should have mentioned it to Chris, but he said there was only enough time to work on a few things, and i felt the others were more important...

There was an atmosphere there, that you couldn't get by just going indoor jumping.. i think Idiot Boy learnt alot from it!!

Di Lampard was very into forward canters too! It worked quite well with William as he gets lazy if he doesn't have enough impulsion. Had a lesson yesterday with Annette Lewis on Liberty, and we were doing the opposite - shortening the canter. He feels so big and untidy that I asked to concentrate on this, and bless him he tried his socks off. We did it in Patchetts indoor that they use for competitions and so it was quite spooky. I find when he gets in the ring he worries and drops his back end so I can't ride him "together". I look forward to taking William to her, but she was quite pricey - £35 for half an hour.

Yeah.. mum is too.. she can't bare the eventer way of a very slow almost dressage canter to jump out of.. so normally i jump out of a much stronger canter!! just Squeak wont move forwards off my leg yet, not without going flat.. so i tend to let him do that slow 'nothing' canter... bad habbit maybe.. will kick harder next time haha.

Wow, you lucky thing, Chris Bartle is FAB! I saw him last year at Merrist Wood and thought he made a lot of sense.
The thing is I've forgotten loads of stuff, like the box and the neck strap thing. I'm definately going to try that on Axey now.

Very jealous indeed, CB is a great rider and teacher so I've heard. Must have been a fantastic experience.

My instructor trained with him in Yorkshire and I can honestly say that she is the best instructor I have tried and really makes sense. She has completely changed the way I ride and my horse goes so much better. She is actually the first person to say that you need a forward canter to get to a jump, I can hear her now telling me to ride at my fences! Her methods just make sense.
