Hi everyone,

My girlfriend is an avid reader and contributor to these forums and I'm reliably informed (near daily!!) that they're the best resource for equine related information.

I have no background with horses so am hoping you might all share with me your Christmas wish lists. What would you buy for yourself or your horses that would leave you positively beaming? Especially on Christmas morning from your significant other? What would the nicest treat for you be..?

Thanks so much for your time.

P.S. I'm hoping my girlfriend sees this so I can get her list first hand, it's probably cheating a little but she'll never guess it's me...

My partner often buys me riding clothes or he gets me vouchers for the local saddlery so I can buy what I like, he tends to not buy stuff for the horse as he has no idea on the sizes they would need hence the vouchers, his also got me tickets for horse events in the past too, olympia is a nice one as it is in December.

Depends massively on your budget. For my birthday my other half got me a point two (protective blow up air waiscoat incase of a fall) I was thrilled but at £400 ish there expensive if it wont be worn.
Could you sneak to the yard and ask friends of hers? Were always gossiping to horsey friends about what we want (or need!!!) for our horses.
Loving your inititive though!

Do you actually know who she is on here? If so, I guess that you know what she does with her horse - whether she is a happy hacker or competes in a certain type of competition.. And yes, it massively depends on your budget.

Wish u were my OH ... I got a tin opener last year !!!!!! It's my birthday on Sunday and have hinted I want a hot horse shower or BD membership or a new table and chairs for home ;)

This is such a nice thread - kudos to you :D

A nice head collar & lead rope set, always goes down well I think - and can be adjusted depending on budget. A nice saddle cloth or numnah too - perhaps even embroided.

I'd love a coordinating grooming kit set with matching bag/container, too.

What does she do with her horse? That could help think of some more ideas ...

Might get a tin to go with the opener then :p

OP - There are two threads on here one with the most useful things people have bought and one with the most useless things people have bought - if you have a couple of days of your life to spare they are well worth a trawl, both have been commented on in the last few days so wont be too many pages in!

Engraved leather headcollar.
Posh show rug/bridle/boots/grooming kit.
New hat, riding gear, gloves, scarf, wooly hat etc. body protector
or maybe more practical items such as wheelbarrow, shavings fork or mucking out equipment.
Lesson with a trainer that she finds inspiring.
Horsey books? be it autobiography or books with hints/tips lessons etc.,

If i think of anything else i'll be back.

The leather headcollar with name plate is a great idea, or even a nice name plate for horses stable?

Gloves (can never have too many pairs!) Cool horsey socks, nice tie/stock pin, new whip (tee hee) autobiography from one of her fave riders are a few stocking filler type thingys.

If u want to spend more maybe a nice pair of breeches, or a jacket or a personalised thematex tyttpe rug or numnah? Make sure u get the sizes correct tho :D

I am hoping Santa will bring a mobile horse shower for the lorry, a hay steamer & a nice frame to put all my fancy pictures of pony doing dressage in :D

Should add, incase he is reading, that my dear OH for my 25th (many moons ago) got me 2 beautiful jackets, posh gloves, a lovely velvet hat, plus show shirt, stock & ties, all off his own back, the little peach! The women in the tack shop all fell in love with him & used to give me the worst looks whenever I went in there after :D :D

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions, there are so many here I could never even have begun to consider. Budget isn't really a factor, I'm hoping a quality item and a vast quantity of well considered stocking fillers might escape me from being assistant poo-picker on Christmas Day, though I'm not holding my breath! Please do keep your ideas coming!

My girlfriend is quite active on these forums, and I know her username... She might figure me out from mine but I won't give the game away, I hope all of your SOs look after you this Christmas!

Well if my BF happens to come on here and figure out who I am, I'd really quite like some schoolmaster riding lessons at somewhere like Talland, please! Or Dovecote RS :D Maybe I should point him in the direction of this thread!

Not sure I like the idea of stuff made from horse hair... I'd kill my BF if he started cutting out chunks from my horse's mane!

If you wanted to do something quite special, what about getting something made from one of her horse's shoes?

Last b'day mine had a print made from a photo my sis had taken of me and my horse. Was really lovely and now has pride of place in my living room :) For Xmas he got me a beautiful framed hunting print that I'd been drooling over in a pub we happened to stop at for dinner one night; went back and bought it.

Otherwise, riding coats, hi-viz, yard boots (even nice riding boots if you want to splash out!), vouchers, anything like that will always come in useful and be appreciated.

How thoughtful!

This is a lovely idea if you can somehow get hold of a few without physically removing them from the horse - which she may notice! You can make them into things like coat racks / wine hooks / signs / photo frames etc.

The leather headcollar with engraved name plate is also a really great one to go for if she doesn't have one already, I think everyone craves one of these for their beloved horse!

Something that has been on my wishlist (though will probably cave and buy it myself) is one of those heated gilets which can be charged up - they are incredible and amazing things to have when it gets to -10!

As someone who makes and sells horsehair bracelets I will try reassure you that you only need a chunk of about 1cm of tail. I always get people to cut from the centre of the tail as well! I have never found that people notice the missing bit.

Sometimes people are even sneakier and take only a tiny amount cut from several places by the dock! Then it is almost imperceptible.

Chunks from the mane aren't used, it is too short normally and also too noticeable if people go cutting chunks out of it!! ;)

hi my OH is going to paying for me to go to HOYs next year i love him very muchly for this

have to agree with going mad if he cut a chunck out of my horses tail to get something made someone i know had this done to her beautiful m&m she was fumming x

I would love it if my oh would get me a mug with a picture of my horse on it!
Or my cat. that kind of shows some thought and preparation has gone into it..us ladies like things like that its really impressive!
Going onto a horsey website full of women is pretty impressive to...what a good oh you are!

I had a horsehair bracelet made for my friend's 21st, you take hair from the tail, about the width of a pencil. Her mum pulled it out of her horse, but Ive also had one given me as a surprise, and my mum cut it from the centre of my horses tail (under the dock), neither of us were any the wiser our horses were missing a few hairs!

Horse shoe is a lovely idea, I saw a facebook site where you can have wineracks, candle holders, and all sorts of other things made out of shoes (and can send them your own horses shoes or they make them from new ones). I'm planning on having a winerack made for Christmas for my parents :). These :

A thermatex rug (size down from regular rugs, they are big & stretch) or quarter sheet (if she uses them?) are nice gifts if she doesn't already have them. I was given a beautiful quarter sheet to match my horse's thermatex rug embroidered with my initials, which I love :).

Engraved headcollar as mentioned is a nice gift. Brass tacks are the nicest IMO and the lady said if the headcollars turned out to be the wrong size, even though they came with engraved nameplates they could be exchanged for a different size. They come up big.

If shes into matchy matchy then a saddlepad & bandages from http://www.furfeathermeds.com would go down a treat :). They also have lovely tops/ jackets/ gilets for the rider from top brands such as Pikeur & Eurostar. If unsure what she'd like best they sell gift vouchers :). Can thoroughly recommend, fab customer service.

Tickets to Olympia as mentioned would also make a lovely present :).

Stocking fillers - a Santa hat etc for horse / helmet cover could be a nice fun gift :)

Ooh also if its to her taste Tiffanys do/did a lovely horse shoe necklace. I was given one a few years ago for my 18th and wear it all the time its my favourite necklace, it still looks fab and should have years of wear in it :).

If your girlfriend likes jewellery you could go with a horseshoe necklace or if you want it to be a bit more personal how about maybe a locket necklace with a picture of her horse inside.
You could buy her clothing from any well known horse brand such as Joules, Mountain Horse, Ariat or HV Polo
The only thing I'd say is personally I'd rather something for myself than something for my horse as a gift:)

What about a trip to Badminton - as a weekend away? You shouldn't find it too horsey, its exciting and just nice being in a lovely park belonging to a stately home..

There are a lot of companies nowadays that make things from your horse shoes. I want one from my horses made into two entwined hearts. My husband is a mechanic, so will make it, and hopefully one for other horsey couples we know. If you search eqwine on Facebook they have some lovely stuff.

As small stocking fillers, gloves, welly socks etc are always a failsafe.

This is a great post, well done OP for the stealth mode tactic, I like it!

I share a horse and for my birthday OH had been in touch with owner and got 4 of his shoes from her and had them decorated by a local artist, so thoughtful and beautiful!

For Xmas I am after a decent pair of half chaps and boots so have been leaving around the house multiple copies of Mountain Horse catalogues with post it notes stuck next to the ones I want ;)

If you do end up buying something for her clothing wise make doubly sure that you have got her size right and ask the shop for a receipt and what their policy is in case it doesn't fit and she needs to return or swop it. I would personally never buy someone clothes, my OH got me some Mark Todd breeches 2 years ago and they were very ugly. I felt bad about exchanging them and I knew my OH was pretty put out that he had "got it wrong".

Finally, best gift I ever got was an adopted horse certificate from Redwings. It's easy to get carried away at Xmas and think of yourself.

What a thoughtful boyfriend. I wish you were, but know you're not, my other half.

How about some little gifts for the horse as well as stuff for her. I would love it if somebody thought of my boy as well as me for Christmas. Nothing expensive, a bag of treats or a likit or something like that?

I would love a smart leather headcollar. In fact I was thinking of asking my OH to get me one this Christmas. It's less domesticated than the only other thing I can think of - a slow cooker!

I would like to met a bloke as thoughful as this!

How about:

-a painting/ drawing of her horse?
-a realy good photo ofher horse in a really nice frame?
-if she likes jewellery how about a Pandora/ similar charm bracelet with a horse charm
a nice really warm coat
- a polo shirt which is personalised
-a eallynice saddlecloth in her colours if she competes
-if you aren't always up the yard helping her how about as a funny present a "this entitles (her name) to" voucher- could do x amount of tack cleanings, x amount of poo pickings, x amount of muckingouts etc?

I would absolutely love a painting or drawing of my horse, done by someone really good!! Nice big piece of art that i can put up on the wall and have forever :)

nice headcoller or embroidered rug/saddlecloth

some lessons with a good trainer

they would be my top three :D

what about a horsey photoshoot? so maybe a voucher so she can book it when she wants then offer to buy a canvas after the shoot? :)
