Christmas - to ride or not to ride - what are you doing?

Hi all,

Silly season is nearly upon us. I'm being nosy really and wondered what you're doing Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Do you ride or will ned get a few days off?

MY little fella will get three days off in a mixed grass paddock - luxury for him seeing as he'll have a few mares to fuss over, no knee deep mud and no horrid work.

The paddock is opposite a housing estate so the local kids will 'go to see the ponies' armed with carrots, apples etc.

I plan to ride Xmas Eve and Boxing day but not Christmas day unless it happens to be a full moon making it light enough to ride in the dark.
 
I was planning to ride as always ride around christmas, routine doesn't change for horses but my donkey has managed to break himself once again so he clearly thought he needed the holiday! :p x
 
Depends on the weather!
There is nothing finer than a hack on Christmas morning.The aroma of other peoples roast turkey wafting through the air,woodsmoke,the vague wiff of sherry on the vicar's breath as he leaves the church,happy people wearing dubious knitwear and freshly unwrapped perfume..............It makes coming home to beans on toast rather satisfying
 
I like to get up early Christmas morning, muck out and all the other jobs, ride while it's quite on the yard (joys of having an indoor school!) and home before everyone is even up...last year OH didn't even notice I had gone!!
I turn out my friends two horses so she gets mine in, it woks out great as she gets to see her kids open their pressies in the morning and then escape the mayhem in the afternoon and I can stay in and have a glass or two of vino :)

Christmas eve and boxing day are normal routine
 
Hi all,

I'm lucky in the respect that my lad is at full livery so I don't have the worry of of caring for him over silly season. I'm going to 'take the dogs for a walk' just to I can see him though - and the lovely yard staff will be getting a huge tin of chocolate as a thank you and for just being brilliant :D.
 
Horses at home - no help so no different to every other day. Just seen forecast on the news and it's rain, rain, rain, rain so mud, mud, mud, mud :mad:

Even more Bahhumbug now!
 
This is the first year when we may have time to ride on christmas day, as the wonderful ex-foster daughter has volunteered to cook and have us all at hers :D Just have to hope that the weather is a bit better than it has been the last few days, we seem to have constant fog :(
 
I'm always amazed that people think the roads will be quiet for a hack on Christmas Day. I always find there's plenty of traffic about, everyone going visiting or off to parents for Christmas dinner :)
This year I should manage to ride, it'll be a little later than normal so I can see the kids open their presents :)
 
Mine will both get Christmas day off - so they can enjoy there presents too! ;D
Then hopefully going for a nice hack on Dartmoor Boxing Day with the sister depending on *dry* weather!!
 
My Christmas Day hack used to be tricky when my daughter was little and got up early for presents, had to rush about to fit in a quick jog round the block,but she's a teenager now so likes her sleep a little more! Can ride ( weather permitting) and be back before her & her Dad get up. Sad this year as my 20yr old is lame :"( , so daughter's pony will have to do! He's only just started hacking out to keep me sane, so fingers crossed, the Christmas dinner gets to the table :)
 
I was planning to bring mine back into work after 5 weeks off but weather is trying to ruin it. Not because I won't ride in the rain but because I'm on duty as a flood officer thanks to all this water falling out of the sky. I get today off but looks like I'll be working straight through the holidays from sun up til dark. If I want to get back on the crazy beast it will have to be in the dark!
 
Will be riding every day. Need to wait for my brothers/sisters to get here on Christmas day so we can open presents together, so me and mum are going to go for a hack. Will be excellent road conditions to take my young horse out! Also riding xmas eve before work (christmas eve is just another normal day for me!), and then boxing day.
 
Won't really have time on Christmas Day . . . but will try and ride Christmas Eve and Boxing Day . . . we're trying to get GD fit for going out to compete in a couple of weeks so got to keep him ticking over.

We will, though, make it a family affair and all go up together on Tuesday - santa hats, mince pies, and some guinness for the boy with his tea ;).

I can't ride properly because i've got my arm in a splint but i'm going to take her for a little potter down the fields bareback, in a headcollar :) She's a star and just plods if she knows you're not doing things like normal. Am going to spend lots of time cuddling instead of proper riding :)
 
Whats with the Guinness, doesnt it make then drunk, give colic possibly, do you mix it in feed or let them drink it straight. I will try to ride out if weather permits.
 
Well its meant to be overcast but dry on Xmas day here so I might actually go ride in the morning - as I dont have my kids on Xmas eve this year (they are going to their dads), I have offered to turn all the horses out on Xmas morning so I may as well do my yard duties and go for a quick hack :D
