Chronic grass sickness, your experiences please - good or bad

Hi there, last week my horse was diagnosed with chronic grass sickness - having been showing all the symptoms for a fortnight.
Glad to say we are battling on, crossing fingers and toes.
Am getting increasingly concerned about the long term prospect - would appreciate any experiences - good or bad.

I've not had first hand experience, but I've heard a few cases of chronic grass sickness cases recovering fully. The nursing is intensive but it can be done.
I hope things go well.

Well if its any help my friends pony got GS in Sept last year , she almost wasted away, bone and fur.
She nursed and nursed and nursed her trying all kinds of feed to make her eat, nothing worked TILL! she found fiberbeet all sloppy and gooey. Now she is lean but not emaciated was touch and go many times. The important thing is too keep the horse un stressed and tempt it with feeds till you find what it likes. Thankfully Ella has pulled through . Goof luck with your girl stay strong for her :)
 
I have no experience with this but just wanted to say good luck. I really feel for you this is something I dread. I hope it works out xx
 
HI good luck my mare didn't make it ,she was fine last Friday night all ready for a show next morning up to yard and she was stood at the back of stable shaking,thought it was colic ,witch she had 18 months ago twisted gut had op fine 5 day away home on 6 day 7 day stitches come open got her back to avonvale with her guts held in with a sheet tired around her, made full recovery vets said she was amazing . any way called vet out gave her a sedative to relax stomach she was not drinking or eating and passed to pelets ,day 2 vet back she is salivating so vet say we will tube her gave her water lead her out she has a nibble of grass and some more drugs she still standing no sweating but holding her head lower call back two hours later she winnies think shes on mend still not eating back in morning notice her flanks are tucked up tight and shes been salivating a lot also her neck was puffy vet back i said about neck vet didnt no what was doing it seamed like she cud not swallow ether so vet said we will tube her as she had not drank any thing put tube in the smell was awful laid tube on ground and all this black foul water kept coming out the smell she was 18 watched her born and die
 
So sorry you have to deal with this having seen 7 at same yard some years back all die from gs some went on for weeks one for months others dead in hours terrible situation to be in but i swoe then if any of mine got it i would not treat it and would have pts couldnt stand the suffering not what you want to hear hun but please dont let the vet push to long to try a recovery they ar few and far between huge hugs and vibes for you and your horse xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
 
I have and two cases of GS one lived one died.

The mare that lived was also in foal. We did the long journey up to The Royal Dick vet College in Scotland. At the time they were the only people that knew much about the disease. She did live but was never 100%. She did loose the foal though.

The second horse went down hill over night and was PTS.

A friend had a gelding that had it and she nursed him back to health.
 
Thank you all for your replies, sorry to hear of the losses some of you have experienced. Rest assured I won't let the vet push me along- I don't think she would. Whin is reasonably bright and eating 5 meals a day, peeing and pooing- so as long as she tries I will. Many thanks again
 
Just wondered how your horse was doing, im in the same situation,
my mare was diagnosed last saturday, she is still eating but has tremors in her backend
they dont know if its acute or chronic, but she is fighting it, they are keeping her another week to see how gets on, she was operated on with a blockage, and had a biopsy to find out what it was, hope your horse is still fighting x
