Chronic pain. How do you cope?

Some of you really sound like you are going through a hell of a lot. I suppose pain is relative and I am gratefull that whilst walking is a bit of a nightmare , once I am on my horse I am fine. I just have to figure how to do the tesco shopping run on horse .
I did try asking work if we could have a mounted division... They weren't having any of it!

Gosh what a hopeless lot we are lol

Amazing to realise just how many of us cope with such a lot.

Most of the time I just grin and bear it. Sometime like now it annoys me so much I could scream. I think the final straw was when I realised even if I force myself it's not enough as I'm too weak to get the best out of pony and she is such a lovely forward going mare.

Some useful tips. Thank you

I cannot use turmeric as I am also on warfarin :(

I Try and keep a happy medium between keep going and having enough rest. Hard to know when things are so up and down. Nothing is constant. What will help one day may make it worse the next.

I had a wonderfull few days when I had some prednisalone for a cough . I felt 30 years younger, trouble is that it is such difficult stuff. I must say that I dont think the medical profession quite understand what we put up with and are prepared to work with. I know exactly what and why it does what it does and I think that given adequate support and care ,the side effects are manegable. and vastly better than the pain. Its not the pain I mind ,its the pain stopping me doing the things that matter to me that I mind.Grumble over!

I have arthritis in the joints in my hands. Dr says it's osteo, I reckon it's RA. I take turmeric and it's fab stuff, as good for pain relief as naproxen or diclofenac. Mike, my mother had RA and took prednisilone 5mg daily for years. She did get the side effects, but like you considered it worth it.

I have to 2nd the advice for you with Turmeric. I have arthritis in my hip ,knee and ankle . Before christmas I was taking painkillers jus to be able to keep on my feet . I read the Turmeric user group info that Bobbly has suggested and started on that . I cannot believe the difference. I dont take any meds for pain now and am back to running round at the RDA. Half my group are now on it aswell !!! . It is much more effective when taken with ground black pepper and olive or coconut oil . There is loads of info on the site on facebook and they are starting up a new forum soon so that anyone can access All my dogs and horses are now on it aswell . They have never looked better . Please please have a read , I wouldnt have believed the difference such a simple thing could do . Please feel free to pm me .

I am riddled with arthritis, was prescribed Diclofenic which wrecked my stomach, now on Naproxin, supposed to take 8 Co Diene Solphate and 8 Paracetemol a day, had such good results with the arthritic horse on Tumeric, I tried it myself, a month later I'm nearly pain free, can dismount normally, instead of rolling down his neck or western style, can hold a pen, sleep without having to sit up to turn over, hell I can ride for longer now without having to get off and lead till my hip settles, my OH is so impressed with my improvement he has now taken to Tumeric for his bad back.
Try Tumeric, what have you got to lose. PS I no longer need the strong painkillers or Paracetemol, I still take the Naproxin for the swelling but I can tack up myself, previously my OH had to do up girths and bridle buckles and I can bump my knuckles without bursting into tears, it was that painful

Mike I have been on predisilone for 25yrs. My new rheumatologist was horrified when he found out and was certain I would have severe osteoporosis. However scan showed very strong bones.:). Which I attribute to the fact I drink plenty of full fat milk. I've tried stopping the milk and other dairy products but it didn't make any difference

Thank you but as I've said I cannot take turmeric as it thins the blood and I'm on warfarin
Also RA is very very different from Osteo. RA is an immune disease

I have really been helped by taking 2000mg of flaxseed oil (capsules) a day. Took it to try out for mental health, but I am sure it's helped lubricate my joints.

I've just started taking Kril oil capsules which are supposed to be the same sort of thing. So fingers crossed

The trouble is that basicly the medical fraternity do not understand fit active people who want to get on with their lives and who have goals and ambitions. They seem best suited to dealing with the couch potatoes who role over at the first sign of pain. I have ,since my accident seen a variety of medical attitudes. A few impressed me ,most were fools.

soulful, I hope the Kril oil works - not heard of it, so off to look it up ! But the flaxseed (aka linseed) oil has undoubtedly helped my mental health and joints - I no longer get the terrible thumb pain (tenosynivitis) that plagued me for starters. x

Mike your right. Most of them are awful. I have been extremely lucky with my hand picked ankle surgeon. He is amazingly good at understanding we actually want a life and not content JustBeing to be pain free sat on the sofa. He have me an ankle replacement instead of a fusion partly because of my RA and partly as fusion would affect my riding

Do look it up. I found it when I was looking into turmeric. It seems they have a lot in common

Just doing so now. I am so sorry you are in pain. The funny thing is that, I do not remember the times when I have been in very serious pain (I was suicidal at times it was sooo bad), it is blocked from my mind. The human brain is just so clever.

I never want to go back there - but if I do, at least i know I will recover and be myself again (I hope). x

So sorry you found yourself in such a horrible place Yes it's amazing how the brain works.
At least for me I know there are some relatively good days, which used to last for weeks Maybe they will again one day.

For me this forum is a great help. I suspect that whilst I think I am posting sound and logical wisdom ,I am probably (rightly) seen as barking mad. But it does help with the isolation. You can be surrounded by your friends yet unable to talk about this stuff, yet on here , Barking mad mike is ok.

I am sure you will get through this. Pain is manage-able now. I've had two ops on my back, and i have annual injections into my spine and thumb, but that's fine. I know I am very lucky to be doing what I can do, even if I can't work any more.

I really hope that you do get answers. Not sure if you have tried a TENS ( I have a boots one), but that has helped a lot. x

Drugs help me. The gp prescribed ones of course. The other thing is having my head in the right place. Pain is part of my life now and I have to deal with it. Ask for help when I have a bad day etc. I also find keeping warm helps me too.

My mum and two very good friends have RA. It is an awful condition and so unbelievably painful.
