My 16yr mare has been diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Possibly due to underlying kidney condition, possibly due to a drug administered. She is back home now, we've been given advice about her diet to avoid excessive protein etc, and she is to be blood and urine tested regularly to check parameters stable. Parameters so far ok (creatinine a bit higher than reference, but stable), however, she does not concentrate urine, and seems unlikely to do so in the future. She drinks and urinates more than normal, but is otherwise bright, and maintaining weight. I know this is very rare, so not much literature/guidance. Her prognosis is guarded, although vets can't give specific time scales. I wondered if users had any tips to keep her healthy and happy for as long as possible/anything else which might help her? Thank you.

If you are still riding, warm her up well before you get one. I had one with it and it caused him to buck when I mounted. Watch for tearing of rugs - if she starts to rip or bite the sides of her rugs, she's in pain. Mine ate VAST quantities of food and lost weight, so you will know when she is failing to cope if yours does the same.

You are very unlucky, it's very rare. I'm sorry that you have to deal with it too.

Hi i have just got my mare home from leahurst she has the same condition as your mare, she is 8 years old and has been diagnosed with reneal faliure too she is allso managing to keep her creatinine low as it was at 600 last friday but over the week it has dropped, she is managing to keep her weight but only is able to concentrate her urine slightly but is able to dilute it. the vets have told me that her kidnays could fail again but they dont kno when or if they will ever fail again. i have been told to give her soaked hay to help makesure she gets enough water she also not allowed any hard foods like cubes, carrots, apples. if there is anything diffrent you have been told would you please let me know as it may help me too. Thank you :)
